Old ruin of a Christian Temple
Feb 2020
Not a lot to see here as there are only some remaining pillars and a crypt from an ancient 5th century Christian Cathedral and some Greek inscriptions on capital beams. However, the Temple of Thoth (Djehuti) is nearby with some large baboon statues.

Interesting

Stopping first at the town of Malawi the area known as Hermopolis, we visited the statues of Thoth, the God of all knowledge and patron of scribes, before moving a little further to El Ashmuein to view the remains of the Coptic basilica, built upon the site of a pharonic temple. There was an eerie feel about the place in the haze, and surrounded by security with balaclavas and machine guns. The poor shepherds with their sheep were herded away from the tourists! The security measures seem way over the top and I’m still not sure whether it reassures or scares the pants off tourists.

A unique opportunity
Apr 2019 • Couples
Visited as part of a tour from a Nile Cruise.
Probably more known for its two Baboon statues. Not the most preserved of sites but littered with pottery everywhere. You could hear it crack under your feet as you walked around. Crazy really when you can't get within 30' feet of Stonehenge. The site almost felt like it had only just been discovered because of the state of the surrounding area. Glad to have had the chance to visit but certainly would not go back, once was enough for me.

A unique site for explorers

El Ashmunein relates to the ancient major city of Hermopolis. Consequently there are fragments of the city all over the present site.
I visited on a day with heavy sandstorm, so sight was very limited, surely more can be seen on a clear day.
On the site of the old mission rest house used to be a open air museum. However, only two baboon colossi are left to see nowadays.
Not far from there are the remains of a 5th century Coptic basilica. The site is freely accessible, and the standing columns, together with fallen ones around make it a very impressive and interesting site. With lots of unique photo opportunities.
