About
Back in 1916, San Miguel started as a wholesale food market. Today, this covered gourmet market’s drawcard is some of Spain’s finest produce and regional specialties. You'll find it nestled in the city center, clad in cast-iron architecture—it's also the last remaining iron market hall in Madrid. The market’s fleet comprises traditional tapas bars, seafood stalls, artisan bakeries, quality butchers, and an array of booths selling other fresh ingredients. It gets busy during lunch hour, so arrive early. Walk over from the famed Plaza Mayor, or make a pit stop after touring the Royal Palace of Madrid and the adjacent Plaza de la Armería. – Tripadvisor

Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

We were advised by friends to come here, and my wife and I were not disappointed. This market is lively; lined with food vendors of all kinds, selling Tapas as well as drinks. The food and the experience are great. Highly recommended!

This was our first meal in Madrid and I would say its a location not to be missed. We had so many unique foods, especially seafood that I'd never had before. By far our favorite was the Galacian squid. We really liked that there was such diversity in food and beverage and plenty of places to stand around and eat. There aren't a whole lot of places to sit but there are little table ledges all around the rim of the building interior.

Excellent market where we picked up everything we needed for a picnic—olives, Iberian ham, ham sandwiches, cheese . The food is beautifully displayed and stall keepers very helpful.

Good market with wide selection of alternative tapas/small snacks, desserts and alcoholic bars - However none of the bars sell non-alcoholic/soft drinks so bear this in mind! Additionally, there are also no toilets within the market so make sure you go before coming here! Beautiful selection of different foods to suit all tastes such as seafood, cheeses, burgers, meats, pastries, desserts, cakes and alcoholic beverages. I would also note that this market can get very busy so would suggest grabbing all your items before sitting to feast or spliting off in a group and getting someone to reserve your seats as these get taken extremely quickly!

Fun experience, but not sure the best food in Madrid. As other reviewers have noted, this is a feast for the eyes - great selection of different bites, and decent food quality, but portions are generally small and prices are significant premium . It was completely packed with tourists, few locals, which is usually never a good sign.
That said, I would recommend going once for the experience

The Mercado San Miguel which is smack in the centre of Madrid in the old part of town is a must visit place for foodies. The market (which is actually more like a food galleria) is teeming with cuisine from all regions of Spain and more.

The colors and display of what is available from plant based foods to fresh seafood and meats are a feast for the eyes. There is also wine, cocktails and all manner of drinks.

The place is chock a block with tourists sampling the food and drinks and most of the food is a little pricey, considering its all self service and the tables are limited in numbers. Having said that, if you are in Madrid and never been there, its worth a visit.

Unfortunately just a touristic place. The food is NOT authentic, only for those who eat there for the first time. Authentic Spanisch food is soooooo much better. Skip the place and visit the smaller tapas places ...
