Puerto Real Declared a Parque Natural in 1989, the Bahia de Cadiz consists of 10,500 hectares of marismas and, largely abandoned, salinas in the municipalities of Cadiz, San Fernando, Chiclana de la Frontera, and El Puerto de Santa Maria. It stretches from Sancti Petri in a broad swathe around the southern, eastern and north eastern sides of the Bay of Cadiz as far as El Puerto De Santa Maria. Since being declared a Parque Natural the various municipalities that administer the area have opened up access to the public and there are now hundreds of kilometres of paths and tracks that can be walked and cycled. The twelve separate areas can be accessed from a number of places.

The salt flats have a large path round them and the security guide can give you a map. Lots of egrets when we went. We could see flamingos from the road but they had clearly flown away by the time we arrived! The security man showed us where they usually are. It's very hot in the park and exposed so take water.

We spent a couple of hours wandering through this city park. The park has the added attraction of having views of the sea through the exotic foliage. There are a number of water features which add to the parks charm.

I ran from Puerto de Santa Maria (centre) to the Parc and got a bit lost on my way ended up running around the Laguna. It was really nice. Flat trail route meandering between the various water areas of the Lagunas, tons of birds, a few friendly cyclists. The loop took about 4km. It is a shame the cycling route I took to get there was alongside the main road, there may be better back-roads access to get there. Would definitively recommend for a walk, a hike or a cycle.
