Giant octogonal monument for Ernst Abbe by art nouveau architect Henry van de Velde & 4 Constantin Meunier bas-reliefs
Apr 2013 • Friends
Monumental edifice on a green square, surrounded by all kinds of buildings that at that time had something to do with Ernst Abbe and his optical factory The factory buildings, including an austere art deco skyscraper, the Ernst Abbe Volkshaus, a library for the labourers, a school, ... You name it.
The monument has been restored but vandalism urged a limitation of access. So now, it's a bit uncomfortable to see the whole interior and the magistral design by van de Velde. The octogonal building has a glass roof that shines on the bust of Ernst Abbe. The effect of this transcendental light is indescribable and gives Abbe kind of a divine status. One of his major achievements was the introduction of working days of 8 hours in Germany.
