Wartburg Castle is a must see for anyone who seeks to understand the history of Germany, and indeed, Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Coupled with a trip to Erfurt and to Wittenberg one can follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther who began...More

Our driver guide did not have any knowledge of the reformation nor of Martin Luther and was only a driver. He did provide some excellent history of divided Germany as we drove to Wartburg Castle. The actual castle tour is more of a history of...More

Our family all agree that this is a must do when in Eisenach. There is much to appreciate about this unusual castle, including the well-known story of Martin Luther and the lesser known story of St. Elizabeth. We recommend you pay for the Guided Tour.

We took the English tour, which is offered once per day. Our guide was great and made the castle come alive. The room that was re-done in the early 20th century with a bunch mosaic was fantastic, a real gem. For those who follow Martin...More

Access is via a twisty mountain road to a pay parking lot, then hike (or pay to ride donkeys) the rest of the way up, which can be steep in places. (There are also shuttle vans for elderly/impaired.) The only way to view the interior...More

We absolutely loved the Wartburg castle. First of all it is beautiful and romantically situated on top of the mountain overlooking Eisenach. We opted out of the full tour as we were really not interested in seeing another castle and the interior. However we did...More

An easy 2-mile walk from downtown Eisenach was amply rewarded by a superb castle and truly excellent tour in English at 1.30pm daily. This place is fascinating - especially Luther’s translation of the Bible into English he did whilst in hiding there; also the origins...More

The only English tour is offered daily at 1:30 pm and is the only option to see some of the best rooms, since you cannot access them without a guide. I recommend arriving an hour or even two earlier - if you are coming by...More
