Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, the Town and Parish Church of St. Mary's is the oldest building in Wittenberg. The east chapel dates from 1280 and the triple nave structure with the two late Gothic towers dates from the 14th century. The...More

This church, located close to the old town square, is known as "the mother of the Reformation". It is closely associated with Luther who preached here starting in 1512 and where he started to denounce the selling of indulgences. It was also the first church...More

It's an interesting and nice building whose two square belfry towers are outstanding particularly owing to their aesthetic character. It is withheld that the name of that Church appears already in a document from 1187 though it seems that the oldest parts of the Church...More

Really interesting painting in the front of the church. Wish there would have been more information in English. Still, worth a visit.

An impressive interior displays the power of art as a medium of propaganda (or expounding the truth, if Lutheran). Side displays explain what is meant by all the panels and, being 2017 and the "big 500", there is an especial effort this year to explain...More

The church is not as attractive as the Castle Church, but it has an interesting interior, and it is important in the context of the Reformation, since Martin Luther and, one imagines, his supporter Philip Melanchthon, were in the pulpit a good many times. The...More

The architecture alone is well worth seeing this church. Make sure to spend time inside and enjoy learning the history.

Not only did Luther preach from this pulpit, but the church is packed full of art and sculpture, and should definitely not be missed!

In this 500th anniversary year of the Reformation it was especially appropriate to visit the beautiful Stadkirche Sankt Marien. The altarpiece is lovely. Martin Luther is remembered.
