The Green Vault is unique--so many unusual treasures in a treasure of a place--all ornate and over the top in a town where the architecture is also already over the top iThe audio guide is terrific and tells a story of a life most of us cannot even begin to imagine. My question--which no one could answer-was who polishes all that silver?!
You need to book ahead to visit the vault but it is well worth the advance planning.

Please don't miss this attraction in Dresden - have been to a lot of museums but this one had some more unusual treasures made of ivory, ostrich eggs, a cherry pit, coconut shells.
Well worth making a booking for the Old Green Vault (but if you miss out..the New Green Vault has similar treasures on show).

Beautiful rooms, incredible detail. Really gives you an idea of what it was like. A bit boring for our son

I only went to the new vault as the price for the historic one is ridiculous on top of what you already pay for the palace. The new vault was more than sufficient however to satisfy me, there were many beautiful and breathtaking objects on display here

The Historic Green Vault is lovely, but expectations were so monstrously high that it simply had no chance to meet them. I actually liked the New Green Vault better. Regardless, if you enjoy seeing wonderfully crafted luxury items and lots of them, you will not go away unsatisfied. This is one of those instances where having a timed entry with limited attendance really enhanced the experience as it would have been far less enjoyable if it was crowded. It gave you a chance to linger and not have a bunch of antsy people wanting to push you away so they can get a quick peek. And there were pieces that you definitely wanted to spend some time with to fully appreciate the beauty and even novelty and ingenuity of its design. The overall experience of what Dresden has to offer makes one sad to think of all that was lost not only there but throughout history in mindless and brutal wars, beyond the horror of lost lives. Perhaps visiting there will inspire one to work for a more peaceful world.

In the Residenzschloss there are two "Green Vaults":
- the historic one ("Historisch Grünes Gewölbe")
- the new one ("Neues Grünes Gewölbe").

Entrance to both are included in the castle entrance ticket: the visit to the historic vault is regulated, and you must be there shortly before the time specified on the ticket for check-in.

In the historic vault there are about 3000 pieces of jewelry in 10 rooms:
- Entrance Chamber, Foyer), with artworks of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance
- Amber Cabinet, with artworks made of amber
- Ivory Room, with art pieces in ivory
- White Silver Room, with silver artworks
- Silver Gilt Room, with gilded silver and gold works of art
- Hall of Treasures, mirrored room containing vessels made of colored gems and amber, mussels and ostrich eggs, rock crystal
- Heraldry Room, with copper and gilded coats of arms of the Saxon provinces, the Polish state coat of arms
- Jewel Chamber, with crown jewels of the Saxon-Polish royalty and rings, chains, medallions and gems
- Bronze Room, with Renaissance and contemporary bronze statues
- Room of Renaissance Bronzes
No picture is allowed in the historic vault.

The new green vault hosts jewelry mostly from the Baroque era. There are about 1100 pieces on display. The following is the list of the rooms:
- Hall of Works of Art, with treasures from the second half of the 16th century
- Micro Cabinet, with masterpieces of micro-carving, such as the "Cherry Stone With 185 Carved Faces"
- Crystal Cabinet, with pieces in rock crystal
- First Elector's Room, with pieces from the first half of the 17th century
- Second Elector's Room, with pieces from the second half of the 17th century
- Room of Royal Precious Objects, with ivory and pearl pieces, clocks and watches
- Dinglinger Hall, with pieces made by court goldsmith Johann Melchior Dinglinger
- Enamel Cabinet, with painted enamels
- Travelling Treasures Room, with cases for the transport of masterpieces
- Neuber Room, with pieces by Johann Christian Neuber
- Watzdorf Cabinet, with a hat clasp decorated with the Dresden Green Diamond, the only large naturally green diamond that has ever been found.

This is a must do in Dresden. We were here as a part of a tour group, and I am not usually an art museum guy, but the works displayed here are fantastic, and I really can't fathom the skill and time it must have taken to make almost all of them. You will be in a state of wonder trying to comprehend just how they were made.

I purchased a combined ticket for Residenschloss and The Green Vault, and I must say that the museum experience was incredibly sophisticated. The museum itself is well-preserved, and the collection is impressive. However, what really blew me away was the exceptional presentation of information, ticket handling, and item display. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life.
One of the most remarkable achievements of the museum is its ability to thrive despite the devastating bombing that the city endured during World War II. Overall, the museum is exceptional and definitely worth the cost. It's a great place to go with friends, family, or even children, as everyone is sure to enjoy it.

A must do in Dresden, wish we had allowed more time and known before just what old treasures are kept there.
Think we were allowed photos, just no flash cameras, normal for museums?
If we get back, would spread over two days.
Even the building is worth a visit.
