When we visited the museum section of the Municipal Library (‘Stadtblibliothek’ in German), we had the whole place to ourselves. The library itself was already closed for the day. This specialised museum was much smaller than we expected, which was a bit of a disappointment....More

Not the most inspiring building from the outside, Trier's Stadtarchiv hosts a truly magnificent collection of ancient manuscripts in its recently renovated treasury. One full copy of the first volume of the Gutenberg bible plus several unique historical documents such as the Codex Egberti and...More

Excellent collection of ancient manuscripts. The audio guide, which is programmable to various languages, was very informative. The staff was very helpful. Surprisingly, we were just about the only visitors when we went.

Although the library is being rebuilt, the librarian Dr Nolde is delighted to show the treasures in his collection, which includes some superb medieval manuscripts and charters. Though from the outside this looks shabby and unpromising, do not be deceived, it is unforgettable.

I do understand that medieval manuscripts and early printed books aren't on everyone's list of "must see" items. If they are, this is a must, must stop. The Stadtbibliothek has a superb collection that includes a Gutenberg bible, marvelous old terrestrial and heavenly globes, and...More
