This is a very nice old building and I found it worth a visit to have a look at it. And because it's only a short walk away from the market place you can easily combine it with the visit of other attractions of Mainz.

A quick visit stop with friends during our Mainz walking tour. Nothing overly elaborate in design for this medieval (circa 15th century - not made of wood despite name), but an interesting relic in that it is one of three remaining towers comprising the original...More

A short walk from the main marketplace of Mainz, this is one of the last towers that belonged to the city wall that once surrounded the city as part of its defense system from the 15th century. The towers were the gates or entrances into...More

Over 80% of Mainz's main city was destroyed in the Allied bombing campaign of WWII. The Holzturm is one of the last remaining markers of its previous history. While the Cathedral and other major buildings have been restored, or were spared, take a moment to...More

This apparently is the tower and gateway into the old city of Mainz, it is beautiful, but there is very little information provided on site for the tourist, and no sign of the old walls that surrounded the city.

Mainz was heavily blitzed during World War Two so much of the city is modern. This is one of only three such gate-towers still remaining from the old city wall in Mainz.

We spend a couple of minutes to see this impressive medieval tower in the heart of Mainz. You can walk around and realize that the original base level is below the current street level. Signs explain the reasons why and give further information. A few...More

The tower itself is interesting and maintained nicely. However, when I was there I witnessed a homeless man living underneath of it, with actual furniture, yelling at himself. Other than that, the tower is 1 of 2 (I believe) that still exist from the days...More

Of course. the tower isn't wooden and never was wooden. It is made of rubble stone. On the contrary, it was tall (6 tier) defensive tower, created in the Gothic style, and had at its base the span for city gates. Just nearby there were...More

Part of the original fortifications of the city. There are a couple of these towers still standing from the 15th century built of iron and wood. They are still in use today for municipal offices and meetings. Easily viewed from many parts of the city.
