Nothing more to do here than walk and enjoy the lovely, historic homes. I did feel a little intrusive, as people actually live here, so I limited the photos I took.

Well, Saltaire or Pullman or Bournville it isn't! But Margarethenhohe is interesting enough to merit a 20- or 30-minute ramble to get the idea of the Krupp worker housing project. Eerily empty! No services. But it's where lots of people presumably want to live, for...More

This area is named after Margarethe Krupp who built housing for workers at the Krupp factories . It's a bit like the game suburbs you see in some UK cities - designed and built with a human dimension.

It is a pleasant enough suburb of Essen but hardly a tourist attraction! Maybe interesting for students of social architecture and early 20th century social history, but it's really only a version of : Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of ticky tacky,...More

This well restorated and still used housing area from the last century Shows in which way "social house building" was performed hundred years ago. Very nice for a short walk and watching the beautiful houses.

Located to the West of Essen city, this place is a traditional German quarter dating back to last century. The history of the place is interesting, get a guide to explain it to you. It also offers places to eat or drink something. The prices...More

A witness of a different era. Every squaremeter transports you back in time - more than 100 years of history. Margarethenhöhe is the first German "Gartenstadt". Go there in the evening after nightfall and enjoy a drink in the Hotel at the central square.
