Wafting through Cologne, the scents of gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, and mulled wine hail the arrival of Kölner Weihnachtsmarkt, the city's festive annual Christmas market. Actually a collection of various markets around Cologne, the event begins the last Monday before Advent and runs for one month leading up to Christmas. The biggest and most festive market resides at the ornate Cologne Cathedral, where about 150 merrily decorated wooden booths serve up wintry treats and display artisanal crafts, such as colorful blown glass and intricate wood carvings. In the cathedral's square, children ride the carousel and visitors of all ages marvel at North-Rhine Westphalia's largest natural Christmas tree, lit by 50,000 LED lights.

Beautiful city, with a weekends worth of Christmas markets to get round, and the easiest way to see most of them is by catching the land train right in front of the cathedral. There are around 6/7 markets to choose from we saw four of...More

We enjoyed some gluhwein (mit rum 😉) and ice skating! Market was crowded but everyone was on a good mood. Definitely worth a visit!

Absolutely lovely experience. There’s different markets with different themes. Lots of similar stalls but all lovely to visit in the day of at night. The largest one is by the cathedral and is just lovely all lit up at night.

The market was really good, a large array of food on offer, great mulled wine to warm us up in the snow. The traders themselves were very friendly and appreciated that I tried to speak German.

Christmas markets in Cologne have pure Christmas spirit. I especially liked the Land of dwarfs - it was decorated so nicely!

I dislike Christmas a lot. But these markets are absolutely gorgeous, all the markets in Cologne are just perfect. Don't think about booking any restaurants whilst you're there, just snack your way around the markets - the food is exquisite.
