Seems to me Frankfurt is in denial of its past atrocities and this stark memorial is an example. It’s not so much a memorial of an atrocity but a brief reminder of a dark period in time without an explication of impact or complicity. Nowhere...More

The stark memorial and the Jewish Memorial Wall are painful but necessary reminders of the horrors of the Holocaust. All Frankfurt Jews deported from 1933-45 are carved on the Memorial Wall, including Anne and Margot and Edith Frank. Never again.

The floor is filled with stones that do not allow you to rest, reminding one of the plight of the people for whom this memorial is built. The name plaques make the experience even more personal.

This memorial is outside the Old Jewish Cemetery down Battonnstrasse from the Museum Judengasse. Both are a short walk east of Romerberg and St. Bartholomew's Cathedral. The site of the memorial is where the Borneplatz Synagogue once stood which was destroyed with many others on...More
