In August 2023, while waiting for our afternoon tour of Neuschwanstein Castle, we drove to the nearby town of Füssen for lunch. Crossing the Lech River we could see the town walls on the left and the castle above. Using a good map we found a parking lot. Most of the old town is pedestrian-only and filled with little streets that invited exploring. The pretty squares with outdoor restaurants would probably be livelier had we had better weather. Several streets had nice views of the castle above, and many buildings were painted in bright colors and/or had beautiful murals on them. Especially noteworthy was the brightly-painted Church of the Holy Spirit, located on Spitalgasse, near the river. We're not sure Füssen needs more than a day to fully appreciate, and we were glad we were able to squeeze in the visit we could. Travel-expert Rick Steves wrote that Füssen is his favorite base for exploring the area.

This was the most interesting and picturesque town that we visited in the area. You need to park and then make your way to the old town (if you're using Google maps, look for Brotmarkt - that's in the old town). It's a pedestrianised area with the streets lined with wonderful old buildings housing shops, cafes and restaurants. One in particular is worth visiting - I don't know its name but it's a hat shop. It looks perfectly ordinary on the outside but when you go into it, it stretches back from the door with the widest range of hats I've seen in a long while. There are also quirky elements with old mannequins and dioramas showing workshops and other amazing scenes. Back outside there's good food to be had in the area so it's easy to spend a day just wandering around being amazed as one street scene after another opens up.

Fussen is a pleasant small town. The old part is quite pretty but few real highlights. We were only there as we were visiting Neuschwanstein.

A wonderful town to visit along with your trip to Neuschwanstein Castle or any of the other local sights. Friendly information office to help with anything you might need in the area. Very clean walkable town or with rented bikes. You will not have to look far for quaint restraints and bier gartens. Great food and drink!

The hotel is beautiful, well maintained, just a block from the center, lot of shopping, restaurants etc, breakfast is really good, the staff is nice and helpful, Carolina at the restaurant was lovely and hard working girl, she made our dinner enjoyable, the only think that we weren’t satisfied was the room us small and cramped with furniture and the shower is way small for our taste. Parking was at the hotel grounds and the castle just few miles from the hotel

Enchanting little town. People are very friendly. Shops, restaurants, a museum and castle. Easy to visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle. Also worth a few hours at Kristall Therme salt pools. Book ahead if you want a massage.

One of our last stops on our Romantic Road Roadtrip and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a great base if you’re planning to do the castles. The old town is very cute and charming although extremely pricey as to be expected from a ski town. It reminded me a lot of telluride, Colorado in the U.S.A. I bought some souvenirs here. We also had lunch a few times and got warmed up in some cafes. Definitely worth stopping to wander around the old town a bit.

While staying at Neuschwanstein, decided to stop by Fussen for some local sightseeing and cafe. There seems like a lot to see in a short day of sightseeing. You have the castle with nice aerial views of the town and Alps, plenty of churches and nice shots from the River Lech. There are several cafes and bars for a drink while relaxing with the sights.

This was one of our stops in the two weeks trek through Babaria and Tirol and I am happy it was in the planner. It is the home of Hones Schols, another reason this small town is very famous and looked for.
It is a charming typical Bavarian town with plenty of hotels, nice small shops and restaurants, friendly laid-back people.
Our hotel was right on the main street, a very old pretty building. You must stop and even spend a full day in this fascinating town if you are going to see the Marienbrücke & Neuschwanstein Castle in the area.
