It is a wonderful experiencing traveling and finding something special. The Fussen Museum was an unexpected find. There is a discount with the Fussen Card. Entry fee is rather nominal. There are 2 sections and both are worthwhile seeing.
I became first intrigued with this museum when I saw poster in my hotel room—Hotel Sonne—of a stunning library room. In town, I saw another picture of this famous room. Maybe not the caliber of the Vienna’s National Library—but picturesque enough to take your breath away. Unfortunately, many of the original books were sent packing down the Lech River.
There are informative displays and videos of Fussen’s lutes and violins. In the 17th century, Fussen was a major center for these musical instruments. Not too long ago there were no TV’s or even radios. Music from violins entertained people for centuries.
Once a former abbey, the cells of the Benedictine monks can still be seen. Don’t miss Anna Chapel where the illustrations of “Dance of Death” by Jakob Hiebeler are displayed. These paintings are enough to scare anyone.
We also found a short walk to Lechfall to be rewarding. This was a cataract, now 5 ledges in the most aquamarine water flowing down the gorge. The bust of Maximillian II in the side of the cliff is different too—something you don’t see in Kansas.

Worth a visit to see the library of St Mang and the Emperor's hall. If you buy a combi ticket you can also visit Fussen's castle, a walk up the hill.

Lots of little rooms going off the main corridors made this museum extremely interesting. A unique library was also a highlight.

We visited this museum and were delighted with the quality of displays as well as of didactics. The standout has to be the stringed instrument collection. Fussen was the major Lute maker in Europe in the 17th century and continued to be a stringed instrument producer.

Really interesting architecturally, the displays giving insight into the political and social history of the area, as well as of the town itself.

Hidden gem in Fussen. Get the kombi ticket for €7.00 which gets you into the castel too. The museum is an old Benedictine Monestary in the baroque style and is lovely.
There are toilets in the forecort of the museum which are clean & cost 50 cents a time. (Don't mind paying for clean toilets). There are also toilets inside the museum.
The museum - where do I start? The library is simply breathtaking and really has to be seen to appreciate its beauty as the photos really don't do it justice. The light floods in from the apertures below and above. The ceiling & wall painting is pretty & pink. It is like being in a Disney movie.
There are displays of loots, harps & violins through the making process and instruments to strum - so unusual that we could actually touch/play some of the exhibits.
There are remnants of roman walls & foundations on display. There is an intriguing ceiling dial which moves with the air current.
We had 2 hours in the museum and did not get to see it all, we ran out of time. The museum is massive and well worth the €7.00 joint ticket or €4.00 museum only ticket price. I will make a return visit next time I am in Fussen.
The only criticism I have is that none of the info signage is in Englsh. We were provided with an English booklet the museum have made up but not all exhibits were covered and it was hard to follow as was not in a good order. However, don't let that put you off visiting - its one of the best museums I have visited.

We were interested in the making of violins and lutes, but was surprised to find a stunning architecture Benedictine monastery, remodeling in the18th century, lovingly restored,
The exhibit notes are in German, but you can ask the helpful and friendly staff for a set of translations that you can take with you through the museum.

A very enjoyable visit to a fascinating museum beautifully laid out with good information and displays. The rooms that had been part of the monastery were fascinating especially the library on two floor. Several of the rooms were devoted to the musical instruments that were made in the area they were wonderful with the music being played in the back ground. It was so good that we spent much longer looking round than we had intended
