- Steve SEugene, Oregon1,233 contributionsIt was a nice museum. It was a small local museum. It didn’t have a lot of English. I think only one section had some. I just use Google translate when I don’t know. It works great on menus, museum placards. If I didn’t have that, it may not of been as good. It had about 3–4 different sections with a lot of local history.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 15, 2023
- Russ_Sharon175 contributionsSurprisingly great visitThis was a great stop!! Do not miss it. The excellent gentleman that checked us in let us know about the restoration going on and the lack of some English written descriptions. None the less, we loved it. Beautiful rooms and ceilings. Some fun audio stations in English. After we went through it, my wife and I just felt like we really understood life in Nuremberg from a time long ago, a lot better. Perfect! Not only that, but the amazing gentleman that checked us in asked us if we had been to any place else that day and we said yes, we had gone to Albrecht Durer's home. So, he told us up with an all day pass, that got us in to this museum for half price and then we went over to the incredible top museum for free!!! Seriously, you should check out that museum if you have time. Even if you're just so so on seeing toys. The doll houses and vintage items there are definitely worth seeing.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2023
- Mia MMalmö, Sweden621 contributionsInteresting museum, cheap entranceDue to the renovation of the museum, several floors were closed, so we probably didn't get as much out of our visit as we would have otherwise. To the museum's credit, it must be said that we were made aware of this at the ticket sale by a very competent and helpful gentleman. But we got an impression of Nuremberg in earlier centuries.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 10, 2023
- jbg74Saint Paul, Minnesota1,057 contributionsCool MuseumThis was a pretty cool museum. The written information is in German and their audio guide is being upgraded so we couldn't get an information in English. It was still really interesting to see the interiors of various rooms. One room had a display of rotating photos where it showed a photo of an area in the old town pre-WWII, then a photo of the same place in 1945, then a photo of the modern city in the same area. It really showed how much beautiful architecture was lost in 1944-45.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 23, 2023

We were looking forward to seeing the Crown Jewels of the holy Roman emperor and see a reconstructed artisans house but every room had been cleaned out and handcrafts were on sale. Whilst this would suit some people, we were disappointed as we won't get back here again.

We were excited to go to this museum, as it seemed like there was a lot of interesting subjects and a lot to see. However, upon arrival the staff that dealt with us didn't speak any English so we had to communicate using our VERY basic German knowledge (almost non-existent). It was quite difficult to pay for entry when we couldn't understand each other. When we finally got our tickets, we went through to the exhibits at the back through the courtyard which was all in English. That section of the museum was great and I could imagine it being child friendly. We went to the main museum, starting at the top and worked our way down but once we got all the way up there we realised everything was in German! There was no mention of an audio guide at the desk - not that we would have understood. We didn't see any notices for them and because the first part of the museum was in English we assumed the rest of it would be too. It was disappointing when we found out we couldn't read any of the descriptions of the items we were looking at! We considered going down to get an audio guide but the attempt of getting our tickets for entry was so embarrassingly awkward and difficult, we felt we wouldn't be able to speak enough German. If you don't speak German I recommend taking a phrase book to this place to make your life a little easier. We enjoyed going around looking at the items but it was a shame not being able to learn the history of them. I am giving it 2 stars as it is quite a big tourist attraction (it was high on our list as a place to visit) so we expected at least one member of staff to be able to understand English. Other museums had staff at the desk handing out the audio guides to everyone, so it would have been nice to have something like that or even a clear sign in different languages explaining they had audio guides would have been helpful.

My wife and I decided to explore the museum on our way to the castle (they are close together). For anyone interested in city history, the exhibits provided a great deal of information, showing everything from map making, to key industrial products, and other economic enterprises. As interesting as the displays were, we also enjoyed learning about the how the wealthy leaders of Nuremberg lived by exploring the many rooms devoted to living and other spaces. Taking the time to fully utilize the audio guides is a key to enjoying the museum. The top floor also has an interesting wooden display of the city that should not be missed. It takes a bit of time for the "show" that accompanies the display to start, but we thought it was worth it. We almost missed the special exhibits that are off the courtyard on the ground level, but the friendly staff pointed us in their direction.

This was not suggested by the tourist center but we stumbled across it. If you want an interesting history of Nuremberg this is a good place to go. The audio guide is really good and you can choose what to listen to and what not. The museum starts on the top level and works down

This is a great museum about the history of Nuremberg. There are audio guides in English but unfortunately none of the signs are in English, most of the displays are self explanatory though or explained by the audio guide. The history only went back to 1400/1500's so it would have been good to have information on the area before that but a bigger museum would be needed. One of the best parts is the massive wooden model of Nuremberg on the 4th floor that was built in the 1930's

I don´t normally expect a lot from City Museums, but this one nailed it! It is located in a very old traditional house. Each floor gives you an overview of the city´s history in a certain century. The audio guide is made in such a way that someone who "lived" in the building in that century is the narrator. It is really cool. The interactive city map on the highest floor was the highlight.

Spent about an hour at the museum, and it was not what I was expecting. The tour starts at the top floor, where you get a close-up look at the inner workings of storage (and moving) large items. You can see old drawings and paintings and even some blueprint-like images of the home. As you proceed down to the other floors, you see a myriad of styles according to passing of the years. The kitchen is most informative, with displays of typical meals and place settings, cooking pots, and more. The ceiling of the room just off the kitchen has a myriad of colorful and splendid artwork or angels and humans and animals. In fact, we noticed that each room had a very different style, and a very different style of ceiling, from colorful, to Bavarian, to carved, to "cake decoration". We also saw the photography of Nuremberg from the mid-1800s on, as mentioned by another reviewer, so it may be an enduring exhibit - it was fascinating. There was not much furniture in the building, but the exhibits and the plethora of grand styes in the home are well worth the 5 euro admission (and pay 2.50 more to get into several other sights for free!)

This museum gives you an insight to Nuremberg and it's history. We spent a couple of hours there but if you listened to everything on the audio guide you'd probably be there a lot longer. The staff are really pleasant and helpful despite the language barrier. Well worth a visit.

As a way of seeing backwards several hundred years, a visit here is a must, especially as so much of Nuremberg was destroye in the war.

I've been to Nuremberg several times and this is first time I went to this museum. I paid for the "city day pass" ticket when buying my ticket to the Courthouse so I could visit this city museum for free (so really I got a 50% discount). The model of the city with the English audio guide was pretty cool, the best part to me. The rest of the museum was a little boring, but maybe I was getting tired. It had info on the influences of Nuremberg's crafters, had more city models to look at, art work that seemed somber to me (it was the painting style), and info about the beautiful buildings in the city.
