- sellocelloSt. Albans, United Kingdom293 contributionsBeautiful castle with rich historyOnly 10-20 minutes walk from tourist centre. Beautiful castle with some interesting history. All of the rooms we visited were well preserved or refurbished. The guided tour was very good and well organised. The little gardens in front very cute. Needs booking in advance and you have to wait for your preassigned guided tour slot.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2023
- musketeer1645Birmingham, United Kingdom272 contributionsImpressiveThe tour of the castle is very impressive but, to me, incomplete. You see the rooms used by the family and they are fascinating and impressive but there is nothing to see relating to the people who worked there. It would have been interesting to see the servants' quarters and to hear something of what life was like in the castle both for the family and the servants. One note of advice - book your tickets online through the official castle website before you go. It's easy to do and, if you book a few weeks in advance, you'll be sure of being able to visit the castle on a day and at a time of your choosing. Just a note of advice if you want to make Hohenschwangau village a touring base for your holiday. The village is a single street with a few hotels and some shops selling tourist souvenirs. It leads only to Alpsee which has the Museum der bayerischen Konige near the shore. The scenery is lovely but if you want more to see and do, I'd recommend staying in Fussen which is about 15 minutes away by car (there's also a bus route).Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2023
- Stefano BAbbadia Lariana, Italy73 contributionsExcellent tourWe definitively do not agree with the reviews that say that the visit of this castle is not worth ! It is: it takes 45 minutes, and you're shown about 10 rooms on 3 floors. The fact that our guide was very kind and we could interact with her and that she provided for us the audio-guide as we were Italians in a German guided tour (+ another foreign couple) and we could hear both the guide and the audio-guide, has been a plus ! I'm not used to give tips: this time I was pleased to give.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023

There are two historic castle visits at the village of Hohenschwangau in Bavaria. These include Schloss Hohenschwangau which was built from 1832-1836 by Maximillian II as well as Schloss Neuschwantstein, which is colloquially known as the 'fairy-tale' castle built by Maximillian's son Ludwig II from 1869 until 1886 when constructed was halted after the king's death.
Schloss Hohenschwangau is located on a lower hillside, overlooking the village. It is a yellow coloured, Neo-Gothic style palace that is open from 10am to 4pm (daily) during winter months and from 9am to 6pm (daily) during summer months. Entry fee is €21.50 + €2.50 handling fee per adult and can be purchased online in advance. Unlike Neuschwantstein, which we found to be fully booked up for several weeks into the future, there were limited tickets to Hohenschwangau available on the day which could be picked up at the Ticket Office in the village.
In addition to visiting the two castles, there is a museum in town dedicated to the Bavarian Kings as well as a charming bridge called Marienbrücke over the Pöellat Gorge where you have remarkable views of Neuschwantstein. These can make for good additional sightseeing in the area. You will also find a handful of eateries and souvenir shops in the village if needed.
Note: If you are doing a self-drive day trip, there is a fair amount of car park space available right in the main village right at the main roundabout in front of the Hohenschwangau Tourist Information Centre. It is not cheap at €10 per day but very convenient for those with vehicles.
Note: The TI Centre has public toilet facilities (€1 per use) just next to the front entrance. There is a staffed window and change machine for those who need to break Euro notes into coins for payment.

This was my favorite castle tour - both inside and out! The grounds are beautiful and more accessible, with less crowds. The tour felt intimate and I loved the art throughout. Love our pictures and memories of this place.

We bought online tickets in advance. Today we took train from Munich to there. DB cancelled the train in late minute. We had to manager to transfer a few times and eventually reached there one hour later.
The lady in front of door refused to let us in and did not want providing any helps for us. Besides, her attitude was very rude. Basically, they just took memory from my pocket, and did not provide anything.
I took Germany trains to travel in the country every day recently, surprised me, no single ride was on time, from ICE to RB, always delayed.
Don’t feel to be treated well as a visitor, probably won’t come back anymore.

Bit of a climb but then you would not get the views ! Lovely furnishings inside and really nice castle overall. Worth a stop in the guest shop/kitchen.

This was my favourite of the 2 castles, I think mainly due to the guide Marina who was far more knowledgeable and engaging than the day prior when we visited the Neuschwanstein castle. This along with all the family home details .. admittedly it’s not as beautiful sat on the hill like a Disney relic.. but it was charming & we enjoyed the tour very much & thoroughly recommend.

The tour is very informative and the castle is well worth seeing. Park at car park 4 and then a short walk up the hill to the castle.

I would like to get access to the part of the castle giving me the view of the “Backdrop” of the Mona Lisa. I was told recently that Leonardo Da Vinci used Schwangau as the backdrop. And that it was from the point of view of this Castle... How do I gain access to the part of the Castle that is off limits to the general public?

Art reseachers state the background in the Mona Lisa most likely portrays views in the Montefeltro region in Italy. Another researcher says the landscape image resembles a background screen sometimes used by Renaissance painters in Italy. You might be disappointed then when visiting the Schloss Hohenschwangau should you not see what you came to see.
Having said that, there are spectacular views of the mountains and river from Schloss Neuschwanstein, just up the mountainside from the Schloss Hohenschwangau located on the hilly part of town below.

Hi, we're visting on a day trip from Munich, arriving in Fussen at midday and leaving 1800. Will we have enough time to visit both castles? How long in total should we set aside to visit both? We're looking at the 1430 tour. Thanks

You may not have time to see both castles. Go online to book reservations for tour times and preferred language. You need to book in advance. The tours are very popular. We had a 9:30 and 12:00 tour. Hohenschwangau is a 5 minute climb up steps from town. Neuschwanstein is a 40 minute climb up a paved road. You can pay for a horse carriage to save your breath but not much time.

I don't want to tour the Hohenschwangau Castle. Where is the best location to take photos of the castle from outside? Also how close can you get to the castle without having to pay?

You are able to walk around the castles, touch them, and get all the photo's you would like without going on the tour inside.
There are hiking trails around both castles that I recommend, particularly Queen Mary's bridge (Marienbrücke). Great for pictures!

Yes, the visit is indoor. The walk to the castle is easy and short (also alternative by paved road).

Hello,
do you have to buy ticket if you don't want to go inside the castle (just to walk around the castle)? Thank you

I am keen to visit only the Hohenschwangau castle and am not inclined to book the tickets online as I want to keep my travel plan flexible. Is there a separate ticket counter and hopefully a shorter queue to buy tickets to visit Hohenschwangau castle only? Or do all ticket counters sell tickets for both castles and I have to wait in line together with the other visitors buying tickets to Neuschwanstein castle?

Hi, wtbofnc. What would you like to know about this attraction? I would like to know how I can visit the entire Castle. It seems that one side of the Castle is not accessible to the public. How do I get access to the other side? Thanks,

Yes you are right. Actually only half of facilities are open / possible to visit by public guide. One reason is that there are massive re-constructions going on in that caste. I think we cant do anything but wait for better times when they will open more rooms to visit?
