The simple wooden theater is home to the Passion Play. Unfortunately, it only takes place once every decade. For the rest of the time, it serves as an event and performance venue. When I visited, there was some event going on outside the theater with...More

We have entered the theater to have a look inside. The wooden structures were fine and internal atmosphere pleasant. We learnt that the Passion Play would be conducted in every 10 years time and the coming one would be in 2020. Nonetheless, other operas and...More

This theatre is the setting for the Passion Play every 10 years. Beautiful theatre in an even more beautiful town. All the actors are from this town that take part in the play. The roof of this theatre retracts back to be an open air...More

This was a great option for us. Overall, you get a behind-the-scene tour. You get to see the theater itself and appreciate the size and its outdoor backdrop for the stage. And you get to see the costumes used in the last presentation. And you...More

Since 1634, the town of Oberammergau has presented the "Passion Play" which is conducted in this theater every ten years. The play is based on the Passion of Christ. Next play will be in year 2020. Though this year 2017 is not the performance year,...More

The huge theater can be visited with or without the plays. The passion play takes place every 10 years (next time in 2020) but there are fabulous operas and plays almost all the time. Right now it´s a Richard Wagner opera ("Flying Dutchman"). Tickets are...More

The Passion Play is conducted in this theater every 10 years. Since 1634, the Town of Oberammergau has presented the "Passion Play". Attending the "Passion Play" was very high on our Bucket list. We attended in the play in 2010 because we figured that we...More

Ours was also booked through our tour company. Our guide was local though and spoke very good English. Maybe check if they have a local tourist office or ask the hotel you are staying at if they can help.
