This is a small museum with an option for an extra cost demonstration of weaving on an old Jacquard loom. The museum is interesting, the explanations are in French but they have an English hand out at the front desk. The museum is well done and attractive and if you read everything you will be well informed about weaving and the frequent revolts of the weavers against their selfish capitalist masters. If you opt for the weaving demonstration they will take you across the street to see three traditional looms, one of which will be used by your guide. The explanation will be both in French and English. Then you will watch a presentation on silk, your guide will comment in French only, but be happy to answer your questions in English. The museum and demonstration are included if you have bought the Lyon City Card. This museum is not air conditioned.

This was the worst visit we have had in many years traveling all over the world. It is only two rooms. The local silk shops in Lyon are better museums than this. Plus, a group of school children came in to use the one toilet. Paying visitors, us, were left stranded. We left and found a hospitable bar down the street: used the facilities and had a nice coffee. Do not go to Mason des Canuts

Interesting 3-part historical tour of weaving & silk industry. Very reasonable. Friendly & helpful staff. They had laminated English guide so I could understand self-guided portion.

We really enjoyed learning more about the silk industry and how things were done historically.
We enjoyed the demonstration and appreciated that he talked in both French and English.
It’s a unique museum and definitely worth a visit

A small museum but interesting to see how silk was made in the 18 & 19 century by the 'canuts' especially with living in a similar place in UK where lace was produced. The process was similar. Lovely to see the old looms and learn about Jacquard. The signage was all in French but a handbook was provided in English. Tie the visit in with a walk round the Croix Rousse area - it has great shops/cafes.

Having been to wineries before, we opted for a change and went to Maison des Canuts. Instead of taking a one hour bus ride to a Beaujelais winery, it was a short ride to the top of “Working Hill” in Lyon for an instructive and illuminating hour-plus experience with a delightful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic young woman from Brazil. She was wonderful! I had read some about silk manufacture and weaving, and we had traveled to China and toured a silk “museum” and manufacturing outlet, so knew about the growth and nurturing of silk “worms” (caterpillars) and the harvesting of silk from the cocoons. But as much as I had read or heard about weaving I never truly understood how weaving with punchcards worked…until visiting Lyon. Our docent at Maison des Canuts spoke French, Italian, English, and of course Portuguese and Spanish. Just as impressive, she was fluent in the language, function, use, and history of weaving and thus imparted her knowledge verbally and by example at the loom itself. She answered questions and demonstrated how to correct errors or accidents and how to fix broken threads. Seems detailed, and it was. But by her clear explanation and demonstrations, all was crystal clear, including the function of the punch cards…. a forerunner of the computer. Also of great interest was the history and details of the lives of the workers and their families. All in all, 5 stars, fun and enjoyable and illuminating.

Unless you are able to join the tour at 10am and 3pm, the “museum” is literally 2 showrooms plus a store. It is too small in my opinion to go out of the way to see it.

Not much to see for 2 euro if you don't take the tour (just two small rooms) - and the tour is only in French. You could have a brochure in English to sort of follow along (if you paid to go on the tour) but we chose not too.

For me, seeing this museum was absolutely necessary because the silk industry was why I wanted to be in Lyon, but it was almost painful to be there with the idle looms because I wish they were still producing the beautiful fabrics for which Lyon is famous.

You see the explanation of silk production, from moth to thread, as well as a detailed account of how the industry began and peaked. There is a loom that makes gold passementerie, stopped while weaving an example. That exhibit was the most illuminating for me.

In the gift shop, some lovely scarves are available for prices that are less than highway robbery.

Original weaving looms and fascinating history lesson. Still working and producing fabric - a work in progress involved producing 100 metres of fabric weaved with coloured silks and gold thread. Only 20cm can be produced per day!! Cost between £5000-£10000 per metre!!
