La Rochelle is very walkable, but hire bikes were very popular as well. We walked miles and had a go on the ferris wheel which was pleasant. We visited the Catedral which was nice. We went late July and it was very busy and clearly...More

This is a great place to hang out. We were actually staying in an apartment on the Cours des Dames. There was always things going on; artists, bands, performers. Food vibe after 8pm, plenty of restaurants and cafe's. If you are in LR get down...More

Avoid in August. Crowded and very touristy. To be honest, was really disappointed by La Rochelle. Full of high street chain stores and tacky souvenir shops and the usual tourist traps you’d associate with a port town. Real shame. Maybe better off season?

Just stand and take in the views of the Old Port - or, le Vieux Port.... I could stand for hours (and have!).... a true gem!

The Vieux Port is beautiful - especially on a sunny day. It has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There is no shortage of excellent restaurants, bars and shops.

La Rochelle is the scene of many of my childhood holidays, so I’m not recreating the memories with my kids. There’s lots of different parts of the old port which make it good to explore, and great to sit at a cafe and people watch.

The old port is lovely and the towers are interesting but avoid eating on the harbour front the food is poor and they don't care. France was once the food capital of the world but it's had its day now .

Definitely loads to see . Make sure you see the Aquarium. It's at the port near the towers. Takes about an hour to fully enjoy!!

I am partially disabled (crutches) and didn't take the bus. The ferry is accessible IIRC and the ride is quite nice if the weather is good. The port area is very compact, easy to navigate. The main streets are no problem... More
