Obliterated by both sides during the Second World War, Le Havre was left in ruins. The city was rebuilt on a grid system, concrete buildings constructed out of speed and necessity. The result isn't to everyone's taste but the single architectural language employed throughout unifies...More

This city was bombed to oblivion in the WW2 so its reconstruction is interesting but not fascinating. It is a long walk around the town and the beaches are ordinary, the port a construction zone and the city has long vistas and canals and a...More

Grey and not really lively city on a Monday. A lot of restaurants were closed. There are not many attractions apart from the beach and church.

Le Havre as a strategic port like many other cities suffered badly in WW2. Unlike other cities that suffered an even worse fate it was decided unwisely to adopt a brutalist style of architecture in its rebuilding. The Hotel de Ville (town hall) is one...More

We have visited many, many towns in France, but none so depressing as Le Havre. Endless concrete, soulless repetition and deserted streets. We got out as fast as possible.

Our cruise ship stopped at Le Havre and as the excursions were either too expensive or too long, we decided to simply stay and visit the city. After all, it's a World Heritage Site so we thought it must be something worthwhile seeing. Well, not...More

I have to admit that I am not an expert in modern architecture, but I do not understand that Le Havre is a must see if you visit Normandy. It is a waste of time.

I got the impression that "Le Havre" is a place beloved by the architects but where no one wants to live. Being chosen as UNESCO world heritage site is another blow to the locals who can't demolish some of the buildings; they are condemned to...More

What a pleasure it is to visit the city centre, where the post-war reconstruction has been preserved as a whole. The concrete's showing its age a bit in places, and I hope they've got a good budget set aside for restoration!
