Little Disheartened with Lack of Recognition
Sep 2019
This was the fist of the five D Day beaches that we visited over two days.

There is hardly anything at this location that alludes to the momentous events that occurred here.

The other four landing sites provide great tributes to the sacrifices made.

Local signage will outline scences of the landing with indicators towards local landmarks that still can be seen today. The road leading off the beach that was heavily fortified can still be walked.

However, l am still glad that l made the journey to this location in recognotion to all those who landed, died and fought here.

Celebration of peace and honouring lives sacrificed
Jul 2019
We drove the length of the coast  which was the location of the 5 beaches of D Day. We stopped particularly at Sword beach where it was moving to see the same beach huts that could be seen in the background of grim photos of the invasion days. In Anthony Beevor’s book D Day he recounts a story of a young woman who happened to come to collect her swimsuit that she’d left the previous day in one of the beach huts. The troops were swarming into the beach under fire. She was a nurse and immediately began to help the wounded. She remained there continuously throughout the next 3 days. A postscript to this story of humane courage was that she later married the Army Captain who was also on the beach at that time. Elsewhere in Normandy villages we had seen the many posters flying from lampposts each depicting a soldier who gave host life in the invasion. It was strange that along this promenade there was just one poster. He was British and his name was David de Riuda Winter

Touring the D Day beaches we had to visit Sword Beach as it involved a lot of British soldiers. Driving through the village we saw a restored tank, a sundial dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives and on one of the side streets leading to the beach was a couple of memorials. We found no signs to the beach that would indicate what had taken place there. As we stood looking at the memorials an elderly gent with a smattering of English asked us what we thought of the memorials so I told him I had expected more. He explained that after the war the village took the decision to return to normal life as quickly as possible although they will always be grateful to those that lost their lives. I understood the need to get back to normality as soon as possible but surely not at the expense of properly honouring the people that freed them from tyranny.

A stunning and now peaceful beach!

A beautiful beach with lots of history and memorials along its front. There are plenty of villages and towns along its shores though parking is at a premium in some of the larger villages especially on a weekend.

A lot of money has been spent on this beach, providing all sorts of amenities for visitors.
The Sword beach memorial is a little way West of the main area, but is accessible via a boardwalk.
