Based on its name, we supposed "Place aux oignons" had been an onion market in former days. But it turned out we were mistaken. The name is thought to refer to the keep of the castle of the counts of Flanders. Today, Place aux oignons is a cute little square in the old town, partly taken over by the outdoor seating of a café, the Estaminet Au Vieux De La Vieille. It is hard to imagine the houses were once occupied by industrious home weavers, until their trade declined as a result of mechanisation. The square became home to workers at nearby factories and, from 1965 on, Portuguese and North African migrants. The housing was so dilapidated and insalubrious that the municipal council considered razing Place aux Oignions to the ground. But, in the end, the houses, dating from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, were partially or entirely rebuilt between 1985 and 1990.

This is a cute old square with nice shops and restaurants nearby. It's not a big destination or a reason to go to Lille. We picked Place aux Oignons as a part of our wanderings around the town and I'd surely recommend it for that.

At that time (Mid December 22) , the small road continuing through to another main street was blocked by some construction. This construction was a minor annoyance that's probably already completed.

Lille is a lovely place and My God there are a lot of burger places. I wish I'd had an appetite to try some of them.

Place aux Oignons is a little hidden square in the centre of old town Lille. It’s vibrant and full of activity. Bars and eateries!

Little square with couple of cafes - as previously observed - no onions present. Tables outside so a nice place to while away the time.

This is one of the prettiest areas in old Lille and should be high on your ‘to do’ list. The cobbled streets leading to, and the square itself, has a good range of restaurants, art galleries and quirky little shops. Exit via the alley to the Notre Dame de la Treille cathedral. It all makes for great photo opportunities

I was determined to visit 'Onion Place' whilst in Lille, but was quite disappointed to find not one onion on prominent display anywhere, but rather an attractive little square with a few bars, cafes, 17/18th century buildings and many small side streets hiding little shops and yet more bars. But still no onions. The reason for my disappointment was revealed after a little research, which showed that the name was derived from a deformation of the word 'dominium' (dungeon in Latin) which, over the centuries, became 'dominion', and then finally as of today, 'onions'. So, around a millenium ago, this dungeon would be part of the fortress of the Counts of Flanders, on the nearby mound of Castrale nearby. Sadly, again, this has long since disappeared. You live and learn!!
