The Grotto of Apparitions is located on the immediate north side of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary within ther Sanctuary of Lourdes grounds. This is the location where St. Bernadette experienced her apparitions of the Virgin Mary back in 1858.

Today, visitors can walk beside the grotto and touch the rocks which continuously weep water, which many believe to be holy and associated with miracles including the curing/healing of those who are sick. There is a statue of the Virgin Mary placed within a natural niche in the grotto.

You will also find a prayer and worship area arranged in front of the Grotto of the Apparitions. There are services held here regularly. You can read up on service schedule on the Lourdes website or pick up a paper copy at the Tourist Information Office within the Sanctuary of Lourdes grounds.

The first thing that struck us was the amazing architecture, and how vast the site actually was. We felt an overwhelming spiritual presence whilst praying at the grotto, also saying the rosary at the grotto. Being out of season we didn't have to wait too long in line for the "baths" again a wonderful experience. The only reason we didn't give a five star review is that we felt (as did many others) that €21.00 to get a Mass said in Lourdes was somewhat excessive. Will definitely return some day.

The cave where the Virgin appeared to St. Bernadette. There are seats in front of the grotto and people can line up to touch the rocks.

We visited the Grotto every day during our stay in Lourdes. It's best to visit during the day when it's not as busy. The line can get long after the nightly procession. There is a place to sit and pray facing the grotto.
