There are three basilicas within the Sanctuary of Lourdes including Basilica of St. Pius X, the huge subterranean church near the East entrance to the sanctuary grounds. St. Pius X was designed by architect Pierre Vago and opened in 1958. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm daily and there are several entrances into an oval-shaped underground area that is 190 metres in length and 60 metres wide.

Basilica of St. Pius X holds regularly held mass for pilgrims and other visitors to the Sanctuary. You can learn about mass and service schedule on the Lourdes website as well as at the Tourist Information Office within the sanctuary grounds.

What you will find within the church is a fairly small centre stage and endless rows of chairs surrounding the stage, filling in the huge open area which has the capacity to seat up to 25,000 people.

There is also walkway above that encircles the seating area. Here you will find various religious themed artworks, including 52 beautiful Gemmail style stained glass works, various sketches and banners. These are interesting to see in addition to the mere scale of this underground church.

Such a quiet place just to stop and think. I often find the Sanctuary very busy but the Underground Basilica is always cool, quiet & reflective.

This is an enormous space built under ground.
Simply incredible to see the enormity of the space - and to imagine that it fills in during peak season.

We celebrated mass here on Easter Sunday and music was fabulous! The decorations depicted of the life of Christ are amazing, don't miss this even if there are any services going on.

This basilica is underground. You’ll never noticed that there is a basilica in the vicinity. Huge basilica with lots of portraits of the different Saints. My first time to see the face of St Boniface. The place is not opened for mass due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, it’s another holy site to visit.

Basilique Saint Pius X is one of the three Basilicas located in the Sanctuary Complex, in Lourdes. It is very big, where the biggest masses are done. In fact, it is underground, very nice and curious place. Also it is a very interesting place for no religious or non-catholics.

One can only be astonished by the enormity of this underground Basilica. During the current virus it was virtually empty but one cannot imagine the atmosphere that a full attendance would create. Well worth visiting.

THE BIG ALTAR WITH THE MAGNIFICENT VERY MODERN STEELE CRUCIFIX [i bought its replica in gold for my wife in one of the gold artisans in rue de la grotte ] the illumination of the place the many paintings of so many saints [including my patron saint SAN GORG patron saint of GOZO MALTA. The organ playing the huge choir singing the incence THIS IS HEAVEN ON EARTH. I CONSIDER THE MANY HELPERS DURING CELEBRATIONS AS SAINTLY ANGELS HELPINFG THE NEEDY. GOD BLESS THIS BASILIQUE. GO VISIT.

To provide an appropriate location for 25,000 faithful to celebrate A pontifical Mass, the Basilica was build under the domain proper. Here our Order annually bring many thousands of malades for a week of prayer with Our Lady in hope of healing, both spiritual and physical.

Must visit this huge underground Basilica in Lourdes. Most contemporary in architectural design. There is international Mass on Sunday in several languages.
Stunning biblical paintings along the wall one floor above the sanctuary including Stations of the Cross. All paintings are in contemporary style.
