This place breathes history and it's really cool. Like literally, it's 13c inside. The many tunnels and rooms in and under the fort really gives you an eerie feeling while you are exploring Fort Douamont. Take a few moments to read up on the history...More

We visited both Vaux and Douaumont and preferred Vaux. However we did enjoy Douaumont and if you have the time it is worth the visit. It is like Vaux in that it is partially underground. The audio tour that is included with the admission is...More

Visiting Verdun and the different sites are a powerful and important experience! At the entrance you don’t see that it is a fortress. The impact of hundreds of thousands of shells have changed the fort to unrecognition. The life and tragedies of the Germans and...More

Well worth a visit, in fact almost essential, but sobering, especially when teamed with a visit to the Ossuary. The fort itself is dank and cold, with water dripping from the roof. It's a somber reminder of the conditions under which both the French and...More

Very interesting and atmospheric site. Gave us a good understanding of the conditions the soldiers had to live and fight in.

This fort is so impressive and stands dominating the battlefield. You really need to go here to get a feel of the Verdun battle .We were there on a lovely sunny day .Hundreds of swallows and gorgeous flowers and butterflies. So peaceful now .

Very interesting visit. You can either do a tour with papers to read (they advise that takes about 20 minutes for the tour with the papers), or you can have the audio/video guide (they advise that takes around 50 minutes). The video really helps with...More

We went here as a group to visit the Verdun battlefield. We had a local guide who explained very well the history and the location. The place still has a very special atmosphere and you can feel the misery of the place. Take a coat...More

We are First World War obsessives. It was an awful war that changed Europe immeasurably, and shouldn’t be forgotten. This is an area of France and the war that I hadn’t visited before, yet the whole area is littered with history. The Fort is worth...More

Once you get there and see the outside of the fort is pretty nice to see and amazing how conserved it is. We took the short tour which includes a paper with information of 8 important points. We didn‘t imagined the fort was so big...More

I'd wear jeans and plan for a light jacket; it rains every other hour.

I am reasonably sure that you can go to one fort a day. In fact, I'd say it's a good idea to split the days up as there's a pretty big emotional load at each place.
