Overview
More
According to tradition, the Knights Templar who came to Metz in 1133 built the chapel between 1180 and 1220. The church was part of a larger Commandry destroyed at the same time the Order was abolished. It represents an architectural masterpiece in Lorraine as it is the only rotunda of that kind in the region. Its circular layout is typical of the Templar tradition, (as in the cathedral of Aachen) and it is believed that the chapel was modelled after that of Laon, Picardy, and built 40 years earlier.

This small chapel, though a great little peeve of history, is not open to the public. There are two historical markers with info but they are in French.

The Knights Templar evoke thoughts of legend and the crusades, no doubt promoted by their untimely disbandment in the early 14th Century. This Protestant temple is a small octagonal chapel and not generally open to the public (however there is an information board which enhances...More

You can only see this from the outside. There is some useful history described in a sign. You can easily work this in in walk around the city

It is really a beautiful and special little chapel of the Knights Templar. Unfortunately it was not open when we were there, but this is an important and historic site for the Knights.

Not much to be seen from the outside. Inside it is completely covered with colorful frescoes from the 13th century. Well worth a visit.

This site is on the Michelin walking tour of Metz. We arrived before the opening time on a Sunday and walked the around the exterior for about 1 minute. Given the ancient architecture and history we were hoping to enter. We would suggest that before...More
