This is a stone entrance arch. We happened to be staying nearby so walked by or through it several times a day. We looked carefully but couldn't ever see it move at all :-) There's a nice square in front with palm trees and seats.

Nice portico to enter the old city. Not much is said or advertised about these entrances, but they can be looked at since they are also part of this cities history.

We stopped here for lunch next to the fountain containing the crocodile and palm tree, the symbols of Nimes. Was part of a self guided walk that we got the map for from tourist information.

The gate is just another tribute to Roman building. The wall gave protection and the arch gave movement in and out. Arches were used for everything else that is still standing in Nimes from ancient times (except the Marble House Temple).

The gate has had buildings constructed right up to it and has the modern road that runs underneath it. You can still walk through it and it is lit up at night.

An interesting arch, I think it was the front door of the old Roman city. Now it's very well built up in the neighboring houses.

Build in the 1st century BC, this gate was part of the Roman fortifications around the city. It's probably not as impressive as some other gates we have seen, but still worth discovering.

This is part of the beauties of the whole south of France, most of the towns were small cities surrounded by walls for protection and Nimes is not the exception on the contrary it was very important in Román times, hence you will find a...More

There's little here to see, just a remnant of a Roman gate. The setting is pleasing, with palm trees nearby, but it lacks much interest. More interesting to historians is a plaque dedicated to the memory of the Marquis de Montcalm nearby. He was the...More

Easily accessible, and close by the Semaphore a great local "Art & Essay" movie theater, Porte de France is not particularly set-up in an enhanced manner, yet remains in rather good condition considering its age. A nice artifact very close by the arena.
