This is a part of very ancient Paris, re-cycled many time over and now one of the centers of the fabric and clothing trade. This used to be one of the poorest parts of the city where the homeless congregated. Look for the covered passageways, arrange for a guided tour.

We were lucky enough to stay here. We noticed a sense of community we hadn't seen at home. It appears every one knows each other and some seem to not leave. They were there when we went out in the morning and still there 8hrs later when we got back and still there when we went out in the evening for our nightly meandering. A really nice feel to the area
