Neighborhood: Belleville / Père Lachaise
At the eastern edge of Paris lies Belleville / Père Lachaise, an understated wonderland of local treasures. Alongside the world-famous cemetery, family-owned delicatessens and cafés nestle between local stores and establishments. The richness of the population here has created a little Chinatown of Asian restaurants, and the area comes to life at night by a funky underground scene. Façades change from one street to another as one passes from white walled provincial homes to tall blocks and reconverted homes. The whole area is an inspirational mix of people from all corners of the world frequented by artists, students, immigrants, and Parisian families. Once home to supporters of the Paris commune, its rebellious nature is now offset by its rural charms.

Most beautiful cemetery I have visited
This is a fascinating place to visit. It is amazing to see the care people took to design a resting place for their loved ones. The endless mini chapels are each unique and an architectural wonder. I imagine there were artists dedicated to the art of designing these chapels at the time. This is a site not to be missed on your visit to Paris. Purchase a map at the flower shop across the street from the Porte Gambetta for 2.50 Euros. You will find all the important graves you seek. The most impressive may not belong to names you seek. Be sure to look for Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein (there is a surprise on the backside of her tombstone), Edith Piaf and her daughter, Moliere, Frederic Chopin (one of the most beautiful tombs), Heloise and Abelard, and Jim Morrison (worse looking tomb-very messy).

    Peaceful break from city hustle.
We came for Jim Morrison but stayed for a peaceful walk. It's a large area with many different designs of monuments, from the small and meaningful to the large and elaborate. If you want a break from the Paris hustle and bustle, this is worth a visit.

    A peaceful, surreal time.
My mother and I walked through Pére-Lachaise in October of last year, and it was an excellent experience. It was really peaceful, and even though there were a number of people walking around, it felt very personal and secluded. We even saw a black cat and some beautiful birds. Our personal favorite was Chopin's burial site. I will definitely be returning on my next trip to Paris. I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to visit such a historical place, with so many fascinating people to pay respects to.

    Bring a map
This cemetery is very beautiful but easy to get lost in. Luckily, we had printed a map and brought it with us that day. Even with the map, it can be hard to find your way around. We were able to find Jim Morrison and Chopin and Balzac. Could spend a lot of time walking around here. We went first thing in the morning when they opened and the weather couldn't have been better.

Interesting place- but can be frustrating
This is one of the most fascinating of cemeteries full of famous people but also some of the most wonderful memorials with sculptures both sad/emotional and thought provoking. We had a map we printed off however, it is not the easiest to follow. Some areas rather confusing. There are markers for the sections but it is not easy to find who you are looking for if they are not on one of the main avenues. This is quite a large place with many up hill climbs and steps so plan accordingly and you would want water with you. We did use Google to find a few of the graves but many that we wanted to see, we could not locate at all. If you are pressed for time, look in to taking a guided tour!! There were some with audio tours but even they looked a bit lost.

    A unique experience
Pere Lachaise is the world's most visited cemetery with many famous people buried there from Chopin and Rossini to Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Marcel Marceau. It is recommended to prepare your route beforehand to navigate through the maze of tombstones in a serene setting. There are many monuments, statues, chapels and works of art to enjoy. A unique experience.

Historic cemetery with lots of celebrities
Download the maps from the website, so that you can easily find the tombs you are looking for. Many celebrities: Piaf, Wilde, Rossini, etc. Also have a look at the monuments dedicated to the Nazi extermination camp victims.

    Something a little different
We spent an afternoon here. When we arrived they did not have any maps so I recommend you download and print a map from the website. I did just in case and am glad I did. It gives location of many famous graves, but not all. Even with a map it is a challenge to find your way around and it is a given you will get lost at some point. Still it is like no cemetery we ever visited and even the "non-famous" graves are fascinating. Check out Oscar Wilde's grave. Apparently, women were putting on heavy red lipstick and kissing the stone. there is now a large plexiglass shield around the perimeter still full of "kisses"

I was reluctant to do the tour and ended up loving it!
I was in doubt about whether or not I would enjoy the tour - other than being with my companions, who really wanted to do it. And if we’d had an average guide I probably would not have. But Becky was PHENOMENAL! She is friendly and engaging and clearly loves being a guide. And she knows a lot not just about the people interred at P.L. , but also about the events and time periods that shaped those people and made them still relevant to us today. Plus she was full of interesting stories and anecdotes about the people. I was so surprised when the tour was over because there hadn’t been a dull or boring minute!

Peace and quiet in the heart of the city
A fascinating place. Ancient yet still in use as there was a small funeral taking place in one area while we were there. Its huge though, so easy enough to avoid disrespecting the mourners. We spent a peaceful couple of hours walking in the shade of the trees, amongst the thousands of family sepulchres, and our two teenagers took up the challenge of finding the graves if Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison, and learnt something in the process. Nice, peaceful diversion from the busy city.

This Paris landmark was amazing! Highly recommended. We went alone but happily stumbled upon Raphael, a private guide who knows every square inch and every historical and hysterical fact about the cemetery’s interred. He led us around and made our visit incredibly memorable. (That’s him on the left)

Famous huge old cemetery in the middle of Paris. Many many famous people are laying there, so we came there with wife to find some famous people's graves. It was impressive. And location and how it looks - very green place. Part of the cemetery is on a hill with many steps leading up to it. You can wander endlessly!

This was amazing and sad at the same time. It's huge! Wear excellent walking shoes. Start at the top and walk down. If you are looking for particular people, map it out before hand, or take a tour. A lot of the cemetery is run down. If your family isn't around to do up keep, you truely are forgotten.

I'll visit Père-Lachaise every time I go to Paris. It's perfect for a quiet walk amongst the tombstones, and it's got a ton of natural beauty to offer, too.

I wasn't sure about booking this tour, if my knees would allow it. But I'm glad I did!

A memorable experience! I like cemeteries. I like the peace they give me. While it was interesting to see the famous graves, I particularly was more into the monuments for victims of historical events. 🫶

We had a small group of five, which was perfect. And the pace we took was considerably knee-friendly. Thank you, Becky, for an amazing Sunday morning. Sublime weather. Wonderful group. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We visited on 31 October and found it to be a unique and special experience- one of the highlights of our short break in Paris. It gave us a positive experience of visiting a cemetery and celebrating all those lives and helped put many things in perspective. Would definately return and reccomend to others. X Diolch / merci X

Travelled 45 mins across Paris to visit during normal opening times to find all entrances locked with no explanation. Very disappointing

The young lady guide, Vick, was fantastic.
Patient and kind, articulate and measured.
I salute you.
We may have won the rugby on the 28th November but you won our hearts earlier today. Will return with my wife one day.
Thank you for the effort and for sharing so many wonderful stories of many many moons ago.
