Built in 1799, Passage des Panoramas is the first covered walkway in Paris. Nowadays it is a haven for old stamp collectors.

Long by 133 meters and only slightly more than 3 meters wide, this is the oldest covered passageway in Paris, which opened in 1800. Originally it had paintings of panoramas of famous places, hence the name - and initially they offered a clean shopping option for the rich ladies as they could stay away from the mud of the streets. It soon started housing several shops with stamps and postcards, which are still to be found as well as many cozy restaurants - special mention for Canard & Champagne! The atmosphere is really special with the beautiful shops and the decorations on walls and ceilings. Perfect place to take a walk in winter - but also to get away from the summer heat. Enjoyed the wide array of shops and curious items. Vendors and shopkeepers were all friendly and helpful. Lots of options for lunch as well.

This covered arcade is one of several open-air passages in the area, and you can actually walk for a few blocks by going from one to the next, as they are separated only by narrow streets. Think of them as boutique-filled tunnels through buildings, and you'll get the idea. Built in the 19th century, they were France's first shopping malls, though that term might be a bit misleading to North Americans, as they are far more elegant than the modern shopping centers that pepper Canada and the US. In the three passages in this sector of Paris (Jouffroy, Panoramas and Verdeau), you'll find antique shops, bars, bookstores, knick-knack stores, even a small hotel and designer jewelry, the latter being provided by Messmer Jewelry, located in Passage des Panoramas.
