A 15 minute walk from the Cathedral, but a world of difference. This more intimate, parish church feels much older and is noteworthy for its painted wood interior rather than its stained glass.

This much smaller church is down the hill in a laneway from the more renowned Chartres cathedral but its has outstanding features. Painted in intricate patterns and colours its quite a revelation after the grandeur of the larger gothic masterpiece. The stained glass and the...More

This church is named after the Bishop of Chartres, later made St Aignan. He had a church built on this site around 400 AD but the earliest remnant of the churches built on this site is believed to be the doorway which is from the...More

As the route we planned to walk was closed off, we took a narrow alley way up to the church, which turned out to have great views of the church, as well as being a rather romantic walk up. The church itself is not that...More

The interior might benefit from some restoration, but the intricate paint decoration is largely intact. My photos do not catch the windows at all well. I can't help but suspect that the single flying buttress on the exterior is strictly ornamental. I visited on a...More

This was not In Chartres. It was in Eglise St. Aignan. The parachute is still on the tower of the church since WWII when the paratroopers landed there. The paratrooper museum is not far from here. It is well worth finding the paratrooper museum that...More

This smaller church is much less visited than the cathedral. However, the sixteenth windows are beautiful, with vivid colors and minute detail. It is worth a visit.

We stumbled across this charming place by accident. I'm so glad we did. It felt intimate and personal, but was so very beautiful too. A must see in this lovely town.

If you love churches and you love history, this is worth a stop. Make sure when you visit Chartres you visit the other two churches there. They all all different and beautiful.

we simply walked in and looked around. if not for the information I downloaded before the visit, we would have had no backfround information or anything on the church. It was a very cold day (24deg F) and no one was around.
