Overview
More
With the dawning of the Renaissance, the mighty medieval fortress of Amboise gave way to a royal residence, during the reigns of the Kings of France Charles VIII and François I. The Court, a large number of men and women of letters and European artists, stayed here on invitation from the sovereigns, one example being Leonardo da Vinci who lies here in peace in the Château’s Chapel. This place of high renown in the History of France boasts an exceptional collection of Gothic and Renaissance furniture illustrating the artistic finery of the first French Renaissance. After a visit of the Royal House and the impressive Cavalry Towers, the walk continues in the magnificent panoramic gardens overlooking the Loire river.

We have been in Amboise many times but have never before taken the time to visit the chateau itself. We were certainly not disappointed. We didn't take the audio-guides but found that the booklets we were given provided adequate information and background history. There was more...More

First go to the other site of the river to admire the castle and its surroundings, then walk through to the gate to appreciate the history of the site

Thanks a lot Reyna ! You are right: travelling by bicyle is a perfect way to dicover the Loire Valley. Most of the main chateaux are easy to connect by bike, as Amboise indeed. Hope we will see you again.

We were lucky enough to be around for a Soiree in the Chateau. Medieval instruments and quality musicians. The Chateau is well preserved and the signage informative throughout. We did not use an audio guide nor a tour guide here.

There are many chateaux in the area and this is one to miss if you have limited time. It's smaller than expected, given that it was a "royal chateau", there's not so much to see inside and the gardens are limited. The location is, however,...More
