Unlike the basilicas you see in Italy and Spain, there is very little paint or frescos in this place, rather, they let the natural materials and the shapes speak for themselves. It's spectacular in a quiet and peaceful way. I think it might be prettier...More

The basilica is amazing. It is even better because it is still actively used. When we visited, they were having a music festival. In the crypt is a relic of Mary Magdalene. The cloister is not very impressive but the nave of the basilica certainly...More

Stunning abbey atop a hill with far ranging views and beautiful medieval village surrounds. The vast nave is impressive and the crypt is beautiful. Not too touristy, the area offers lovely places to eat and good shops.

Vezelay is one of the more attractive hilltop villages I've been to in France and the church is a fine adornment at the top end of the street. It has a lovely set of carvings at the front of medieval parishioners in an elongated style...More

... I‘ve seen this beauty a second time now - and there are still new things to explore and to admire. This time we‘ve been fascinated by the capitals that tell heeps of stories. I‘d like to mention the very remarkable capital of the Judas...More

beautiful place if your are into medieval architecture. Beautifully renovated. Take note especially of the tops of the pillars supporting the central nave. but they are famous anyway.

best time in the early morning or evening, after the visit you can enjoy a nice dinner on the "La Terrasse".

The basilica is heavily restored, but the experience is impressive. Very old example if you are tracking down places to check off.

There’s also parking up the hill behind the Basilica if you’d rather not walk as far. Not expensive either.

Unfortunately it's at least a 7 hour drive from Cannes to Vezelay. Even going by train to Dijon and then hiring a car, it's just not possible in a day, let alone within the time you have available. If you're interested in... More
