The Saint-Malo church is dating from the 15th century and is a Catholic church located in the city of Dinan. It is seen a the representative of the flamboyant Gothic in Brittany. However the first church “Saint-Malo” was located outside the walls and this at the location of the current chapel “Saint-Joachim” who you can find on the “boulevard Flaud” in Dinan. This first church was depended on the priory of “Saint-Malo” who was founded into the year 1066 and this by Olivier, Vicomte de Dinan. The bishop of Aleth ceded the priory to the abbot of Marmoutier.

Lovely and unusual

We so enjoyed seeing stained glass depicting locals of historical interest, like Anne of Britagne. Strolling past one evening, we heard the pipe organ being played, stepped inside, and were even more in awe with the beautiful music in such a historic site.

Magnificent

I really enjoyed this Cathedral. It was very impressive inside and even though they were doing work on it which took away from any peace and quiet you might have hoped to have I am so glad we stopped in. The landscaping outside was beautiful as well.

Just waiting to be found

Wandering the old town I passed by this interesting church. So I went in. The portal I entered was Renaissance. The rest of the church quite Gothic. Clearly there have been repairs but all respected the original in spirit. Turns out it was the site of the first church in Dinan but that one was destroyed and rebuilt during the Middle Ages.

We came upon this by chance and were pleased we did. There is a magnificent old tree in the gardens which is very photogenic. The gardens are very peaceful and have a fantastic view os the surrounding countryside.

Blaze of colour
Jan 2019 • Couples
Even on a cold January day we were fortunate to be welcomed by a blaze of colour from the sun shinning through the stained glass windows, giving great life to an otherwise austere church. We enjoyed the quiet space that this place of God offered as did the other visitors. Worth a visit

Enormous Church
Sep 2018 • Friends
Eglise Saint-Malo de Dinan is a Roman Catholic church in the archdiocese of Rennes. If this is just a church I cannot imagine what the diocesan cathedral must look like, because it is huge, and at first I thought it was a cathedral. With its Gothic architecture, its gargoyles, its high vaulted ceilings, its stained glass windows, its high altar, its side chapels, its ancient carved wooden pews, and its high pulpit it is totally impressive. It is also wonderfully cool and calm inside the church, and although I am not a believer, I sensed the history of faith in this ancient church, which was Heritage listed in 1907.
