One of the largest drawbridges in Europe, we were lucky enough to see it open the first time that we saw it, and walked over it both ways later in the day, as well as travelling over it on the tram. It provides great views of the River ape field, the castle & nearby tower as well as the cable car.

I saw this far from it, but this was beautiful and was in harmony with the scene. I was happy to see this.

We walked over the bridge and there was several spots where one could stop and take pictures of the castles and other buildings of Brest. It was an easy walk over as the sidewalks were wide and you had no worries of cars careening into you as you walked.

Recouvrance bridge over the river Penfeld is supposed to be the largest drawbridge (or maybe one of the largest drawbridges) in Europe. This huge, relatively modern construction is located right next to the medieval castle. I believe that the two of them together - and Tanguy tower right beside them - form the typical view of Brest.

As Brest is built on two hills, it has a lot of vantage points to look out in different directions, towards the commercial port, Brest’s roadstead (‘rade de Brest’), the marina, the castle (now Maritime Museum) and the Tanguy tower, the arsenal, the River Penfeld and the Recouvrance neighbourhood on the right bank. One of the best spots for panoramic views is the Recouvrance lift-bridge over the River Penfeld, which is accessible to pedestrians. The advantage over the urban cable car, also offering good views, is that you may stop to take pictures at leisure. Crossing the bridge on foot is not for the faint-hearted as it quite high. An alternative is to take the tram.

This drawbridge is Brest's best known site. Built in 1954 it was the largest vertical ift bridge until 2008.

This huge draw bridge is the iconic structure in Brest. Auto traffic, trams, and pedestrians share the bridge regularly. It's right connected to Siam Street, the main shopping street in Brest. You can easily cross the bridge from near the castle to Tanguy Tower on the other side. I would love to see how this bridge is lifted for crossing vessels.

Yes, I know it is just a bridge and that it is not the oldest, or biggest or prettiest in Brittany, let alone in France or but it is the largest lift bridge in Europe, having said which its existing height causes one to wonder whether the lifting mechanism is strictly necessary. A sailing ship would not pass beneath but modern vessels would have to be very large indeed to require activation.
Having said this the bridge is an impressive sight and gives commanding views over the naval port from its pedestrian walkways plus interesting vibrations as the regular trams run across.
