Do your homework about collecting tickets. We were fortunate to have only four people in total on our tour, the advantage of arriving in the off season. We arrived at 8.45 and no-one else was lined up for tickets, so we sat in our car...More

We made a point of visiting this cave as there is talk of it being closed to the public permanently. It is a must, but you need to be queuing by 7am to get one of the numbered tickets.

Logistics: we went today and showed up at 7:05. We were the only players until one other person showed up at about 8. All three of us took the first tour at 10 which was in English. The cave is a little up hill walk...More

We had been warned that to ensure the obtaining of a space to tour the caves of Font de Gaume, we had to be out front by 7:30 am with all members of the party. One could not obtain tickets for absent others. We were...More

Do your research beforehand! Get to the ticket office early before they open. You may have to wait a very long time in the cold, so dress warmly and bring something to eat if you haven't had breakfast. The ticketing system is weird, once they...More

Archaic reservation system, well documented here, but worth the effort. We waited for the English speaking guide and his knowledge and enthusiasm and passion were inspiring.

Even though we had to wait 2 hours in the cold rain (we were numbers 7 and 8); we were able to get tickets to both Font-de-Gaume and Combarelles in English. Both tours were well done; the group was small enough, the guides knowledgeable, and...More

First of all, as you've read, be sure, especially in season, to arrive before 7am, preferably before 6:30 if you want a place in the first english language tour. We were there in early September, arrived at 6:30, and were #5 and 6. It was...More

We arrived early to be sure we could get tickets. Tip: there’s a great patisserie, Le Grain de Blé, just up the little hill at the roundabout - she is very nice, opens early and has wonderful croissants, bread and espresso to go! Be sure...More

Font de Gaume is is one of the few caves still open where you can see significant amounts of prehistoric painting. I believe they only sell 80 tickets a day, so if you don't get there early, you may be turned away. If you do...More

It is not possible to make reservations or purchase tickets in advance. Get there early the day you wish to view. I'd recommend that you get there a minimum of an hour before opening, more if you can.
