The Esplanade is a huge lawn in downtown Bordeaux, spreading from the by the river ferris wheel to the magnificent Girondines monument at the other end. I suppose some public events are held here, but at the end June heat it looked very uninviting to...More

Might seem like empty space but there is lots here including trees, flowers, and areas to relax in ( though not probably in summer). There is an interesting statue to Montesquieu but the real beauty in the huge and beautiful fountain.

this is an unmissable sight to catch when in Bordeaux. The tram stop is right beside and it takes no effort to get there. The story behind the bronzes is fascinating

One of the more diverse and interesting monuments in a beautiful setting. Sunset provides good lighting.

Huge area that I believe has many events however when we were there it was just a messy gritty large square with a magnificent fountain. Its very near the tram terminus.

The esplanade is a large area of land waiting for something to fill it! I am sure that at certain times of the year the place is full and buzzing but on our trip it was just an area of dry, dusty, gritty land. Easy...More

I've been to Bordeaux many times. I've NEVER managed to walk in the square because there's always something (usually closed) camped there. This time it was an antiques market (closed), last time it was a circus (closed). Some say it's the biggest square in Europe,...More

If you're tired of walking, rest by the intricate fountain with an authentic canelé bordelais (cinnamon rum pastry).

Walk by this terminus of tram and bus to see a wildly elaborate statue of lady liberty throwing off her chains. There is also a year round flea market of antiques and various stuff, along with food boothes, set up adjacent to it.
