Like every city in Ireland, there are numerous churches in Waterford. One of them is the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity which you can find in the city itself. It’s actually Ireland’s oldest Catholic Cathedral and was built almost 220 years ago. It looks really interesting on the inside!

I was on a short trip to Waterford, but had done some research on the web and found www.waterford-cathedral.com and from the pictures on the site I just had to visit it. Apparently it is one of Irelands oldest churches, and is about 215 years old. The high ceilings and huge columns are amazing and there is also a large collection of Waterford Crystal chandileers as well as some really details wood sculpture on the pulpit and altar. It is in the center of the City and not something you would immediately see as a tourist attraction, but I am very glad I found this spot.

I was on a walking tour of Waterford, and left the quay at the Clock Tower to enter one of Waterford’s principal streets, Barronstrand Street. The first building to strike me was the magnificent facade of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Waterford’s Catholic Cathedral, and the oldest Catholic Cathedral in Ireland.
Its classical facade of limestone, with five statues on the skyline, makes it the iconic building on the street. Designed by John Roberts, it was built in 1793, though there were many changes and additions down the years.
On a cold winter day, I found the inside to be bright, warm and inviting with many European connections reminding me of Waterford's important trading port. It was nearly 10.30 a.m., so I joined the small congregation for Mass, which is celebrated at 10.30 each weekday morning. I was especially impressed by the following:
• The high altar elaborately adorned with a baldacchino supported by five Corinthian columns, and the triangular symbol of the trinity.
• The woodwork - especially the pulpit, carved by Buisine & Sons in Lille.
• The Stations of the Cross, also French, and curiously, on the columns.
• The stained glass windows, in the Munich style, from the Mayer’s company of Munich.
• Ten Waterford Crystal Chandeliers – a gift from the company.
On one side of the Cathedral outside, are the tombs of several of the bishops of the Cathedral, Bishops Power, Sheehan and Hussey among them. Bishop Hussey was a distinguished diplomat, and the founding President of Maynooth College.

Love this cathedral. It is different from most -- yes, has pillars and altar and pews -- but it is wider than long, it seems. Also, there is a grotto half-way up the left where you wouldn't expect to see one. Then another surprise is the rather large room in the front left corner reserved for daytime Adoration. There are pieces of history on the walls that catch you by surprise. Stairways are on each side that look enticing... do go and see what I am trying to write.

Such a beautiful church. So many statues of all the saints.
The Waterford chandeliers are wonderful. There is also a lovely Waterford plaque with The Sacred Heart which was donated to the church.
I personally love visiting churches and this one is very special.
Worth a visit if you like or appreciate churches.

This is a very old Cathedral, built I think in 1795. As Waterford City is the oldest in Ireland, the City and Cathedral are well worth a visit.

Just wanted a late Mass & joined the first Mass for the 'Do This in Memory' programme for the local boys school! What a giggle.. Beautiful Church, fabulous choir, booming organ and abs fab acoustics - would love to hear a full carol service with a full Symphony Orchestra in there... Will remember that Mass for quite some time....

I visited today (Saturday), and there was an orchestra and carol service. Unbelieveable place to go either to pray or just to see. I stayed for a while until Mass started and there was a choir called CYC and they were amazing also.
There is so much going on in this city and this Cathedral seems to have lots going on (I believe Handels Messiah played here 24 hour earlier) according to a local.
Recently renovated in an 11 month revamp (2006) I was unaware that this Cathedral is one of Irelands oldest working cathedrals.
Wishing you happy travels.

Located on a lovely pedestrian mall, stands the oldest cathedral, in Ireland, (built in the late 1700's), the interior is quite grand.

Was the chapel a part of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity? Do you have any pictures? (I'm planning a trip to County Waterford, and specifically hope to find the "Chapel of Trinity Without". I want to know if it is connected to the Cathedral. . . which I hope to see anyway.)
