Address
Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Excellent wander

Fabulous walk up with lots of shops and entertainment, well worth the walk up to the castle for the views and wandering around the Royal Mile was most excellent with the little passageways.

Atmospheric old town

Nice place to wander around. Alot of touristy tartan shops, but all adds to the atmosphere. Plenty of nice cafes, bars etc to rest. Interesting historic buildings, with, of course, the lovely castle at one end and Holyrood at the other. Both worth a closer look.

Full of pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops. Something for all to enjoy.

Of course the main attraction is the history, buildings and the Royal connections.

See something new everytime

Understandably the Royal Mile gets extremely busy rain or shine, but you shouldn't let that put you off from visiting. If you want to avoid the crowds head out early in the morning, before the sun is even up.
To get the full experience you can start at the esplanade at the castle (keep an eye out for the witches well) and walk all the way down ending at Holyrood Palace (or the other way around).
Keep an eye out for all the different closes, you can wander down some of them and lots of them have plaques explaining their histories. And keep an eye out for the Heart of Midlothian mosaic.
There are lots of gift shops and cafes and it can get loud at night, so you might want to avoid accommodation that's right on the royal mile.

Due to a knee condition I only managed part of this experience. The Royal Mile was brilliant. Dripping in Scottish history.

Very challenging if you have mobility issues

This is where the tourists all end up. At only point I thought if I see another tartan or whiskey shop I will puke.

OK for a first visit but try and do something different

Step back in time!

Wandering along the Old High Street is liking taking a step back in time! Cobbled streets and numerous closes and alleyways leading off in all directions. Lots of attractions to visit like St Giles Cathedral.

Several Days' Worth Of Exploring Packed Into A Mile.

From the castle at one end, to the palace at the other, and everything in between: walking the mile itself only scratches the surface.
