About
Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Don’t be fooled by the ‘closing times’..
Nov 2021 • Couples
A disappointing visit, we booked a time slot for 2 thinking we would have plenty of time to see everything before the closing time of 4 so we were shocked to find things closing up from 3! We were actually ushered out of the castle at 3:40 with the shop long shut. Extremely disappointing when you pay that much for a ticket and you can’t even stay until closing. There is a lot to see in the castle so it was very frustrating. The castle itself could do with a bit more direction and some context as it all the information felt a little disjointed. However there is plenty to do there..If you aren’t kicked out early of course!

Anniversary visit.
Nov 2021
We went to see the Castle on a cold frosty day in November.
I hadn't been there since I was 9 years old and now am 70.
It was a super view of Edinburgh but would have been better going to visit in the Sumer.

Great castle
Nov 2021
This is a stunning castle high up over Edinburgh, well kept inside and great views from it across the city. A few shops inside the castle if you want a gift. Well worth a visit. It is stunning of a night when it is lit up. It baffles me how they built this years ago and you will see why if you visit it is built on an old volcano from years ago. Mary Queen of Scots jewelled crown and coronation seat is here but you can’t take photos of them or photos in the memorial part were there are all the Scottish soldiers who have died in battle of the years.

Must see
Nov 2021 • Couples
Edinburgh Castle is a MUST SEE. The stars are the Great Hall and the VIEWS! The staff were all lovely, greeting us warmly as we beetled about the place. The military museums were excellent, so much to see. We stopped for tea and coffee which wasn't great, to be honest. Excellent traffic light system in place to prevent overcrowding in smaller spaces. Take warm clothes in winter.

Beautiful views from the castle
Nov 2021 • Couples
Well worth a visit. Very interesting and the staff are so helpful. Several areas (rooms) appear to not be open this time since our 2019 visit, but this is understandable and clearly streamlining has happened due to Covid. We did feel very safe

Grand and historic
Nov 2021 • Couples
Great views and lots of history. Was lovely going there at mid afternoon and seeing the sunset over Edinburgh from above. Sadly the cafes closed earlier than the castle itself but its in a great location so there were other options once we left.

Fasinating historical site with amazing views
Nov 2021
We really enjoyed our morning out to Edinburgh Castle; there are lots of different things to learn about at this site steeped in history with something for everyone. Along with the incredible views on top, this is definitely an attraction you want to make time to visit. The staff were very friendly and patient and the traffic light system for the indoor museums was very nice to have with only one museum, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Regimental Museum letting things down a bit as it was rammed with people who were completely ignoring the distancing signs and no staff in sight to manage it. We were swift to read what we could and leave however, that being said the rest of the visit couldn't be overshadowed.

Spectacular Castle of Light Show!
Nov 2021 • Solo
After almost having a panic attack at the Christmas Market due to overcrowding, I ditched it quickly and I’m so glad I did and went to see the castle, which I could see was illuminated, as I had an amazing time there! I didn’t know about the Castle of Light show till I got up there but with lots of time on my hands, I decided to book it and the stewards were all very friendly and helpful, which is just what I needed after my ordeal at the Christmas Market. The light shows inside the castle were spectacular! So stunning especially the lion! It wasn’t very busy either so I had lots of breathing space and felt so much safer there and at ease. It was an amazing way to tell the castle’s history in such a beautiful and moving way. Would definitely recommend this as a must see to anyone visiting Edinburgh this winter!
