Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

Castle is great. You can see it from all parts of the city. Helps alot with navigation. You do not really need to walk around inside it. Buts it's super cool.

We visited the castle at the end of a busy day. Not giving us enough time to appreciate the castle nor patience to deal with the crowds. The views over the city are pretty. The castle is interesting. I’d suggest getting the audio tour as...More

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the castle. My only complaint was that the royal residences were closed off. The information provided was good enough that we didn't miss getting a head set. Beautiful views of Edinburgh.

This castle and the rock it is stood on has been at the centre of Edinburgh life for hundreds (or thousands) of years. It is worth getting the audio guide because it has a lot of very interesting tidbits on it. You don’t have to...More

Did not manage to get inside (due to time) but the scale and location atop the volcanic plug projects a huge reassuring impact across the town and makes for some stunning sequential street vistas. The Esplanade itself is impressive and worthwhile, with various statutes and...More

After first visiting the museum, we joined a free group tour provided by a castle staff member, Leslie. With a great sense of humor, she provided a good overview of the buildings and history. We then continued to explore the other buildings on our own....More

Located at one end of the Royal Mile, it is a major attraction & a must visit. Try to visit around 1pm so that you can catch the gun salute.

We bought timed tickets online which I recommend as it's cheaper and also recommend going early as it starts to get busy throughout the day and there may be queues to get into to some of the buildings, particularly the Crown Jewels. There is lot...More

Lots to see and do here. We spent a good 3 to 4 hours here. Well worth a visit when in Edinburgh. Free guided tour of the outside of the castle, good local history. Good views over Edinburgh.

Yes you can get a taxi up to the castle gate. At the ticket office we were told they usually have a vehicle to take you to the very top. This was out of order when we went, so I would suggest calling before your visit to see... More
