To really understand the troubles in Northern Ireland, it is essential that you visit the Falls Road and the Shankill Road.
With a reasonable/fair level of fitness, you can do it as a walk. As well as this mural, you will see other wall paintings on the falls road, it is pretty much every next road. Great bit of historical tourism on a dry day.

We first visited driving through as part of the Hop-On Hop-Off Red Bus Tour and then returned the next day and hopped off to see the murals and peace gardens in more detail. Others have mentioned being made to feel uncomfortable or unsafe but this never once happened to us, infact everyone we spoke to was sooo very friendly and helpful, even when popped into a local shop to buy a few snacks etc.

We found the tour bus to be interesting and very sad. Our tour guide explained that even now (25 years after the peace agreement) there's some things you can't say on the wrong side of the wall, such as "Sláinte" (Irish version of cheers) over drinks in the Unionist area (Shankill Road). It is sad that there is still such hatred among neighbours.

We looked at doing one of the famous black taxi tours but found them to be very expensive, we feel we got a very good understanding of the troubles from sitting through the second half of the Hop-On Hop-Off Red Bus Tour, our bus guide was excellent.

Shankill Road is the Unionist area of Belfast and Falls Road is the Republican area. See the many murals on both sides depicting the struggle for power. The dividing wall and gate is still there separating the two communities. Once you cross over the gate you can clearly see a sharp and very quick change in the artwork. The murals change frequently and quickly, an artist can paint over someone's mural in a day.

Worth a visit and really gives an insight into the troubles. If visiting Falls Road, then you need to visit Shankill Road and vice versa. Worthwhile a visit with a guide to give an insight into the troubles.

Our family of five stopped here as part of our private tour and found it to be interesting and a bit eerie. Even 25 years after the peace agreement, it’s clear that peace is fragile and history is deeply ingrained in the people. We checked out the murals, the “peace gate” and the “peace wall.” Well worth a stop for anyone trying to understand “The Troubles.”

We stopped by as part of our black cab tour, very interesting to get to understand the history of events that eventually led to peace in the region.

The Falls Road is the Republican area of Belfast. You will see some Nationalist flags. The murals can be seen, it's part of any visit to the Falls Road. Although the Troubles are behind us, thank goodness, the Falls Road is still a Republican stronghold. Belfast is still a divided city. The flags remain characteristic of Belfast.

I walked here from City Hall. Walking time of about 25-30 minutes. As someone who holds a British passport, I did not once feel uncomfortable walking around here. This is a republican/ nationalist area. If you can't accept that, then stay away. Some British people come here and are unsettled by what they see, what do they expect to find? Come here and learn about the history of this important area.
