Whistlestop tour with Deidre from Cairde na Cille
Interesting, information & intriguing! This was an hour long tour of the 'newer' part of the graveyard, with stories of the era highlighting the legacy of the people of Belfast & beyond. Deidre shared stories which were put into the context of the particular time, with historical facts & realities for the people. Fascinating insights told with respect, knowledge &passion, some even accompanied by fiddle & guitar. I look forward to investigating some of the older parts of Friars Bush, definitely with Cairde na Cille!

    Friar’s Bush Graveyard Belfast
I discovered on Facebook that there are now tours of Friar’s Bush Graveyard in Belfast beside the Ulster Museum. This was a place I had been eager to visit for a very long time. I took the tour on Friday afternoon with Mark Doherty, a very knowledgeable historian. The tour lasted over an hour and covered all the interesting facts about the land and the people buried there (including victims of the famine). The tour finished with a visit to the Jeggy Nettle pub for a packet of Tayto crisps and a chance to sample the Belfast Bap, created by the baker Barney Hughes who is buried in Friar’s Bush. I highly recommend the tour which is held ever Friday afternoon.

    Friars Bush Graveyard tour
Spent a great afternoon on the Friday afternoon 2pm tour of Friar Bush graveyard after finding the group on Facebook. Guides for the tour were Mark and Peter both of whom were very knowledgeable about the graveyard and the history behind the grave stones. I can definitely recommend this for finding out more about the history of Belfast and some of its previous inhabitants. Well worth the visit
    Glad you liked it

    A brilliant afternoon
Did the 2pm Friday tour with a few friends. Mark, our tour guide was great craic and a wealth of knowledge about Belfast's history. Connecting stories, both new and old with the life and death around the graveyard. As someone who has lived in Belfast all their life and walked past the gates hundreds of times, it was an amazing experience to get to walk amongst the graves and sot some famous Belfast names. Will be recommending to friends and visitors to the city!
May I recommend the Balmoral Cemetery tour on Saturday 24th Feb at 11am and on Sunday 25th Feb at 2pm. Even more famous folk interred here

    Excellent guide. Highly recommended
Thoroughly enjoyed this guided tour around Friars Bush . I have always wondered what exactly lay behind those locked gates so seized my opportunity when I discovered that these tours had started . Then when I heard there were Tatyo baps afterwards it became even harder to resist! Very informative guide who was happy to answer any questions and had excellent knowledge of the graveyard and the development of Belfast . Also I was delighted to learn the story behind the Belfast bap and Hughes bakery . Very well presented. I am not originally from Belfast but have been living here for quite some time . I really knew nothing of the graveyard except the name even though it lies within my parish area . Historically a very important site . I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone visiting Belfast as well as the locals.
Many thanks for coming along today. May I recommend the Sat 24th tour of Balmoral at 11am or the following day 25th Sunday at 2pm.

Great informative tour, a must do for visitors who want to get to know the history of Belfast by its past occupants.
Great informative tour about this ancient burial ground from its beginnings until the last burials which took place. Lots of stories about those buried there from all classes and all walks of life. Our tour guide Mark was knowledgeable about not only this cemetery but about the history of Belfast. Stories were bought to life by Marks commentary and additional photographs and material. Highly recommended.
Thanks ever so much for your kind contribution. Don’t forget Balmoral cemetery at 11am on 24th Sat and Sunday 25th at 2pm

A great historical tour of Belfasts oldest cemetery with over 400 years of history.
What a brilliant tour of this old graveyard. Such history and untold stories brought to life by Mark our guide. Thanks to Mark and his colleagues who are restoring this site, new information on the history of Belfast and its residents are being discovered literally on a daily basis. A great tour to bring friends, family and for visitors who are visiting Belfast on short breaks. This graveyard is small in area so you are only taking a few shorts steps between these fascination stories. We intend to take the tour again later in the year to see what new information has been uncovered.
It’s slightly different every time. Look forward to welcoming you back.

Very interesting and informative tour, incorporating sad and uplifting stories. We have lived near this area 60 plus years and finally got to do this tour. An unexpected turn when the guide Mark whipped out a tin whistle and played some appropriate tunes. It made it evocative and atmospheric.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. A little hidden gem of Belfast history. You need to book a tour as it is not open to the public otherwise. Locals and tourists both would enjoy. The guide was very knowledgeable and great at projecting his voice so we could all hear. Even found out why Jordanstown (where I live) is called Jordanstown.
All followed by a free Belfast Bap with Tayto cheese and onion crisps (and a delicious glass of Guinness, we bought) at the Jeggy Nettle. What’s not to like about that. The guides came to the pub and chatted to us there, very friendly.
It was a good Friday on a Good Friday.

Brilliant tour today (my second this year) in beautiful weather, which is a great bonus.
It takes just over an hour and a quarter and you don't notice the time going by as the information is so interesting.
We rounded the afternoon off with a free Tayto crisp filled Belfast Bap in 'The Jeggy Nettle' which is close by.
I thoroughly recommend this tour.

Great tour of the old graveyard, a mere 10-15 minute walk from Belfast city centre; though I drove there, and parked on a side street off Stranmillis road.

My tour started at 11am and was conducted by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic Barry.

If the weather is changeable, so remember to bring an umbrella and some warm clothing during winter and spring months.

My tour cost £10, including an invitation to the local pub for a complimentary Belfast bap and Tayto potato crisps.

Layers are always required. 2023 was the wettest year on record. Due to the fact it’s the top of the hill and has little footfall the ground is surprisingly good underfoot. You can get away with trainers. Did I miss you?

Excellent way to spend an afternoon. Mark's (and others') research into the 'residents' of Friars Bush Graveyard, and telling of the stories, gave us an unusual insight into the last few centuries of Belfast's history. Thoroughly recommend - including the following bap and Tayto crisps at the next door pub.

Wow! Since living in Belfast i have always wanted to come here to this wonderfully mysterious and historical cemetery, however, the gates had always been firmly shut... I am so so glad that this tour taken by the very passionate Mark has changed that. This tour is culturally, historically and emotionally rich and i would highly recommend taking the time for it. It has given me a deeper appreciation and understanding of how Belfast came to be, through the people who have been laid to rest here and the struggles my ancestors would have also faced. Mark is so passionate about guiding this place and i cant wait to see the potential this tour has as more people get the opportunity to learn of it and the many lives within it has held for hundreds of years, Eira.

After having communicated with Deirdre about some family graves in Friars Bush, I was delighted to get to Belfast to see them in February. She and the team had done a fantastic job of clearing the graves I had enquired about, and are really looking after the place beautifully. She even added "our" graves to the tour for us, and let dad speak about those buried there. It's a beautiful space, and Deirdre's tour was excellent. She was a welcoming and friendly host, and did a fanstastic job of telling the stories of some of the people buried there. I'd love to come back. A massive thank you to Deirdre and the whole team looking after the place.
