Ancient stone lines - worth seeing
Aug 2020
Often overlooked compared to the more famous stone circles, the avenue runs parallel to the B-road connecting the A4 to Avebury village It helps give a feeling for the scale of the prehistoric works here - two lines of stones extended up a slight hill. There's limited parking .on the road by the bottom (south) entrance.

Stroll along this ancient way
Aug 2020
This leads off from the Stone Circle at Avebury into the distant landscape that, apparently, was once covered in other sacred sites too. Where the original stones have gone - perhaps to be broken down for local housing - there have been concrete posts put into the holes that have been found along the route. Some of the large original stones still stand and give you an impression of what it would look like originally. It's only part of its original length, it used to carry on to The Sanctuary

Impressive

Who knows why this was designed and built but it must have been of significance to those who did it. This i part of the Avebury World Heritage site and well worth exploring by foot.

Avebury: Giants Live Here
Sep 2019
I had a choice: Avebury or Stonehenge. I choice the former and I am very glad I did. You have no doubt about the power of place when you visit. The standing stones loom around you, on both sides, leading you in a processional path along. They dwarf you as you stand besides them for, unlike at Stonehenge, these stones, a part of the village, are there for all to see and touch. The ancient past pervades the space. One wonders who built them and why but know they are a connection to the Olde Gods and the people who raised these monstrous slabs towards the Heavens. The sheep graze around them. Tourists wander to and fro and those in the village go on with their lives, attending church, working in the pubs and museum and hedgewitch shops that thrive on the visitors' trade and heading off to their jobs elsewhere knowing the stones will be there long after they themselves have gone. My only regret was we could not stay longer. We were part of a Rabbies day trip. Next time, I want to return and walk from there to that other venerable but not as old stone site - Stonehenge.

Excellent walk up to Avebury away from the tourists
Sep 2019
Since parking in Avebury was so excessive, parked by the stones of the Avenue to the south-east of the circle, where you can park for free. This gave me the chance to walk the length of the West Kennet Avenue up to Avebury. A lesser known part of the Avebury landscape, few tourists venture this way, so you will have the place to yourself away from the tourist trappings. Nice relaxing walk with the cows!

Amazing stones
Sep 2019
These amazing stones are quite extensive. Similar to those at Carnac in Brittany which we visited recently.

This was part of my girlfriend and my historical day trip in the area. Quite a tiring day actually. Park at the Sanctuary, wear good shoes and walk the length, absolutely mysterious and magical. You just wonder what this area was all about, will we ever really know?

Great place, as a part of the whole landscape.

I visited the area recently and started at the Sanctuary (why is there not on trip advisor?) and it covers quite an area. There's really only one way to see it, and that's on foot, walking the length. If you're going to do this, I'd recommend parking at the Sanctuary where it's free and walking into Avebury. It's obvious all the locations in the area are somehow interconected. And the avenue seems to be a key link from the sanctuary to the larger circle in the middle of what is now Avebury. You end up getting a much greater feel for the place when walking the route. Diversions on the way include West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill, have a look at these while walking back. You're in essence following one of the oldest footpaths in the country, enjoy the countryside and make a day of it.
