- Joanna CBournemouth, United Kingdom38 contributionsWorth a visitDue to the weather, we didn't visit the gardens but there is plenty to see inside the castle. We had a drink and cake in the coffee shop - cake was great, very fresh! Coffee was good as well. Staff were friendly. There are a lot of steps, as you would expect, but definitely worth a visit to the Keep. Really liked looking around the house. The taxidermy wasn't very nice, and there was a lot of it!! I would recommend a visit but I probably won't go again.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023
- Brian J2 contributionsInteresting, entertaining and enjoyable day at Arundel CastleAn excellent day spent at Arundel Castle which included an entertaining and informative guided trip , by Paul, to the dry motte and Bailey castle. The keep, castle and rooms were very interesting with well informed guides on hand to offer help and information. The gardens were well kept and still colour about even though it was late in the year, Restaurant was clean and spacious, helpful staff and fair prices. Very enjoyable experience.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 24, 2023
- Pamela OLittlehampton, United Kingdom11 contributionsMoat Tour, Arundel CastleThe Moat Tour with fully costumed guide, Paul, was brilliant. He knows his castle inside and out. A great insight into the construction and defence of the original building. Interaction for everyone, faultless history facts and all put over with the right amount of humour to include all ages. Well done Arundel Castle and, in particular, well done Paul.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 24, 2023

- Steve CBroadway, United Kingdom46 contributionsVery authentic and filled with interesting informationThe grounds and gardens are really impressive even in the pouring rain when we managed to shelter temporarily in the greenhouses. The castle is absolutely fabulous and stunning. Well worth the entrance fee. The whole castle is very authentic. The restaurant and shop etc are fitted out in a very appropriate style to the rest of the castle rooms. Would definitely visit again.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2023
- Beeboo2Paris, France14 contributionsExceptional!THE most beautiful castle we ever had a chance to visit. It is the first time I visit a castle which is both a museum with incredible pieces, passionate guides in each room who volunteer information and are visibly enraptured with their surroundings, and a lived-in castle with a cosy atmosphere. Thank you!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 29, 2023
- bubblesotherhalf3 contributionsGreat place to visit.A wonderful place to visit. We were there over half term week & there were plenty of activities for school age children. We opted for the dry moat guided tour. Our guide was very enthusiastic & extremely good at explaining the history of the castle & grounds. He involved both adults & kids in the stories he had to tell, which really brought history to life. It is well worth doing a guided tour. We then went inside the castle, the volunteers in the rooms were very good at explaining more details about the various rooms. The bedrooms were particularly interesting. Its good to know they are still being used by the current family who live there when they have visitors to stay. We spent nearly 3 hours overall & we would definitely recommend. Thank you.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 30, 2023
- James PLondon, United Kingdom1 contributionGreat day outWe had an amazing day out at Arundel. One of the best kept and presented heritage sites we’ve ever been to. Good food in the cafe and lovely gardens - despite it being October - which you can wander around in for hours. The real highlight, however, was the staff. Everyone we encountered was so friendly and helpful. We’d like to shout out Sophie the guide in particular, who gave us such a detailed explanation of the Castle’s history and told us about various paintings to look out for when we told her that’s what we were interested in. She was so engaging and enthusiastic, and we couldn’t believe how much knowledge she had! Well done to all, we’ll definitely be coming back.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 3, 2023
- 522sarah104Lincolnshire, United Kingdom80 contributionsExceeding expectationsWhilst on holiday I was very excited to see the castle gardens, everywhere we turned in the grounds there was a beautiful view and so much colour. We spent a lot of time sitting near the water features as well as looking at the cosmos just taking it all in. The castle itself was a delight, having seen a few historic properties this was one of the most enjoyable and with such breath taking rooms. The cafe was also well worth a visit!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 3, 2024
- Jmcc150London, United Kingdom135 contributionsWell worth the high priceNot cheap but worth it. We chose probably the busiest day of the year - Easter Saturday, first fine weather for ages, and mediaeval fair. Yes, the cafe had a long queue but otherwise the castle coped with the numbers. The staff were really friendly and infomative. The castle, its contents and the history were excellent. I never saw a guide book on the way in. I guess wifi would be patchy given the thick stone walls, so an app wouldn't work. Be warned that the stairs up and down from the battlements of the keep are steep and narrow. Very small children may have a problem getting down, even if they could get up, so there was a short queue to descend. The cafe food was high quality, and prices are probably what you would expect these days. Highly recommended. I would have chosen gift aid, except it cost extra, which is curious, I think they are missing out here.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 30, 2024

We decided to visit Arundel Castle and Gardens as we were on holiday in the area during October 2020 and, sadly, we were rather disappointed with our experience despite the castle being on our bucket list for some time now.
The venue's entrance fee can be rather pricey for what is on offer, particularly during these restricted times which can put many people off. This is not an English Heritage or National Trust castle but one that is still privately owned. However, we did receive a warm welcome from the staff on the entrance gate and in the booking office.
The castle gardens are pleasant and well looked after with some gardeners busy at work whilst we strolled around. As it was autumn the colours were divine from the trees and ideal for a spot of photography.
After a wander around the grounds we made our way over to the castle to begin our tour. We were fully aware of the need to wear facial coverings and that things were to be found slightly different to normal once inside. Only the downstairs of the castle was sadly open which doesn't reflect well given the price of £30 for two adults.
Once we were inside we became more and more disappointed and shocked with the staff/volunteers as we made our way around. In the first three rooms not one of the volunteers/staff members greeted us or spoke to us at all! I even said "hello" to one female and she looked but gave no reply and was very rude! There are no information boards available in any of the rooms or audio guides available to inform visitors of any of the object or paintings which is very disappointing.
In the hallway gallery we were again ignored by the female staff member/volunteer. However, she did come to life when a family appeared and began to talk to them. She even ran after them to give them more information but continued to ignore us! We were flabbergasted speechless at the sheer rudeness of the room guides.
We made our feelings known to what was the only friendly room guide, Aurelia. She was very kind and pleasant and very apologetic regarding the other rude guides. She took us back to the previous rooms to give us very brief outlines of what we had missed. Whilst doing so the other rude room guides didn't even bother to become involved. At one point one of the other guides piped up and said that we "should ask first and speak" if we needed to know anything. We found this to be extremely insulting given the fact that most guides cannot even be bothered to look at the visitors or even say hello or good morning/afternoon.
We came away from Arundel Castle feeling very let down and given the hefty price to enter we won't be returning. The venue has a very snobby attitude and rude staff/volunteers as room guides which should not be the case. Our advise: stick to National Trust or English Heritage.

The town of Arundel is lovely so we decided to pay a visit to the castle and gardens. It is possible to book tickets in advance but we decided to pay at the gate. This was painless and quick although at £56 for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children) I think it is a little expensive.
There is car park just opposite the castle and it is large. 3 hours is adequate if you just plan to visit the castle / gardens but if you want to eat out then add an extra hour. You can use the Just Park app to pay, the machine wasn't actually working in the car park.
Although the castle is open at 10am, you cannot explore inside the Castle until 12noon. I think this is pretty poor and as a result large queues and people gather inside waiting. My children were bored. Why not allow people to look from 10.30am. There is a cafe however near however to placate things.
There is a mask policy inside the castle, most people thankfully adhered to that.
The castle rooms are splendid, lots of fine rooms to see. I think with castles they are appeal to certain age groups, teenagers is probably not one of them, not enough interactive things going on. Warwick Castle is similar but has an interactive ghost / scare tour which gives it the extra brownie points.
You probably need an hour to spend inside the castle. The gardens outside an excellent and well sign posted. These are splended and the highlight of the tour.
I personally enjoyed the gardens although as mentioned my teenage children did not enjoy as much.

I thought Arundel Castle had been built in Norman times, and with several renovations had survived the intervening years. I didn't know what condition it was in or what impression it would make on first time visitors.
It is splendid. The castle sits on high ground overlooking the town and the countryside, and is impressive in all aspects. The grounds are pristine as they lead up to the castle, and the buildings suggest they could still be around in another thousand years. Successive Dukes of Norfolk have made expensive modifications to the structure, rebuilding and refurbishing to latest styles. The result is a magnificent mixture of castle and home, with architectural and artistic treasures throughout.
The gardens are equally impressive, showing the plants and vegetables in elegant style. Everywhere looks cared for.

We visited on Friday 16/7/21, a beautiful sunny day. We were late for our allocated slot due to traffic, so called ahead and told it wasn’t a problem - thank you :)
We started with the gardens as we knew it would only get hotter as the day progressed. The gardens are absolutely stunning. A real joy to walk around and take everything in.
The castle itself is incredible. We really enjoyed looking at the rooms and listening to the wonderful staff/guides tell us about the history and the family. The library is breathtaking.
A lovely day out, highly recommended.
Parking across the road was £5 for 4+ hours, and you can pay by card.

We visited the castle gardens and they were beautiful so would definitely recommend people to go there. We were not able to go into the castle as as they were fully booked and this is charged separately. The whole place was spotless and is very well kept.

The castle looks stunning and impressive as you approach. However, once inside, the tour is extremely disappointing. There is no information at all about the history of the castle or about the people who have lived there. You can ask a guide some questions but generally the guides seem to have several people already asking questions - probably due to lack of information! I cannot understand in this day and age why you can’t download an audio tour onto your phone when you buy your ticket online.
There were a lot of people milling around, which did not feel great in this Covid era. Nobody trying to organise it so that people were spaced out. This meant you couldn’t look at anything for very long before you were surrounded by people! At times if felt like we were part of a group visit. The whole thing took less than half an hour to go round - all for £15 a ticket. This did not feel like good value and I, like others, came out feeling that I had learnt nothing about the history of the castle. Of course there are the gardens but we wanted to see the castle and learn more about it.
Such a shame, as it could be very different with some thought for visitors.

We visited Arundel Castle on a spectacularly sunny September day. The helpful Lady in the ticket office recommded that we visit the gardens first so that any queues inside the castle woukd have subsided. We followed this advice and so we set off and walked around the tranquil water gardens and then the rose gardens that surprisingly was still in full bloom in late September. The scents of the many different roses was heavenly in the warm sunshine. We then began the trek up the hill following the signs for the main gardens, when we finally reached the top of the hill we were rewarded with the most incredible experience. The gardens incorporate so many different features, water garden, fountains, Ponds with turtles in, tropical plants, green houses, vegetable gardens, green house, tropical hot house. The gardens are some of the very best in the UK possibly in the world, and you can visit the gardens without entering the castle on a garden only ticket costing less. We were genuinely amazed. They even have a fountain inside a grotto that shoots a jet of water up and this suspends a golden crown on the top of the water jet! It is no exaggeration to say that here is something amazing in the garden at every turn.
The Castle was extensively restored and improved in the Victorian period and this has resulted in a stunning building with the old and new parts convincingly married together. The inside of the castle features hundreds of rooms, many of which are open to the visitors. Each room is packed with authentic period pieces including original artworks, antique furniture, military weapons, carpets, and some many priceless treasure that are a feast for the eyes. The castle really needs a whole day itself to even begin to explore. There are so many highlights including the Chapel. And the library. Every room is staffed by knowledgable enthusiastic volunteers who are very happy to explain the contents and history. If you love history and quality this is one of the very best comparable to Warwick Castle and the Tower of London.

Visited on Friday 09th October 2020. Having noted its stunning location when driving through the town earlier in the year we booked a local Premier Inn though we only live 90 miles away, so that we could take our time to visit the castle and town. We were blessed with decent weather which always makes a difference and made our way to the entrance at our allotted time. This timeslot was strictly adhered to by the gate guardians as having arrived 10 mins earlier we were politely advised to wait outside. Once inside all the staff were friendly and available both in the grounds and inside the castle. We started our visit with the gardens which have had a lot of work done on them in the last few years we were advised and which reflect that in both their condition and layout. We found the use of wood instead of marble/stone quite interesting in the structures & ornaments around the garden. As we approached the castle we were already satisfied with the visits in just our experiences of the ponds and gardens but the Castle is an absolute vista. I ignorantly once inside presumed the castle was a stylised modern copy of a medieval castle given the fabulous condition of the render on the exterior walls but read that the Arundel Castle is in fact a restored and remodelled medieval castle in Arundel, West Sussex, England. It was established by Roger de Montgomery on Christmas Day 1067. Roger became the first to hold the earldom of Arundel by the graces of William the Conqueror. The castle was damaged in the English Civil War and then restored in the 18th and 19th centuries by Charles Howard the 11th Duke of Norfolk.
From the 11th century, the castle has been the seat of the Earl of Arundel and, for over 400 years, the Duke of Norfolk. It is a Grade I listed building. COVID compliance was everywhere and when approached the room guides were very informative. Couldn't go upstairs due to COVID and TBH there was an air of wedding venue to the place but you have to remember this is a private residence so you are not going to get the access you would at say an English Heritage or National Trust property. An amazing place and it is complemented by a wonderful town. Well worth a visit.

It is said to be necessary to book ahead to visit Arundel Castle and Gardens but on the day of our visit we heard people being told that there were spaces available from lunchtime onwards on a walk-in basis.
We arrived at opening time and visited the gardens at the top of the hill first.
We noticed that there is a golf cart available to take people with mobility difficulties to the top of the hill where the main gardens are located. It is then quite an easy walk back down.
The gardens are interesting and well maintained with some delightful locations for seats to admire the displays. There is a kiosk in the gardens for drinks, ice creams and snacks.
The castle visit was more comprehensive than we expected and because of Covid number limitations it was easy to get round and spend sufficient time in each of the rooms. Guides are on hand a frequent points to explain the history of the rooms and the castle. It was a most interesting visit and we will bring Canadian relatives to see this when they are next in the UK. Just the thing for North Americans….!
The Castle is owned and sometimes occupied by the family of the Duke of Norfolk, so parts of the building are not accessible to the public.

Excellent grounds with beautifully kept walled gardens. The castle itself was interesting but an audio guide would have made it even better. It was hard to read the text on display boards and they were limited. The cafe was very expensive (although we had discount vouchers from gift aid) but the staff were overwhelmed and poorly trained. A 25 minute wait for two coffees with a short queue was ridiculous, and we only waited as the castle itself didn’t open untul 12.00
