Was once a beautiful thriving shopping street. Thank goodness for Fenwicks which is still fabulous.
Newcastle council need to invest heavily if they want people to visit. We found the street shabby, filthy and run down. No seats and the pavements were dangerous and strewn with litter and chewing gum. Very sad.

It is such a mess . Pigeons everywhere…pavement filthy . It really needs some careful planning to restore this street to a decent shopping area. At present it’s full of fast food shops and is not a great experience.

This is the best place for shopping in Newcastle. There are a lot of amazing stores (TkMaxx, Class Ohlson, Primark, Fenwick, H&M, Hugo Boss, WMV, Nudo, Costa, Nero etc etc) and access to Eldon Square. You can find everything there, from food to furniture.

Being a city dweller I visit here quite a lot. Newcastle does have great shopping and lots of cafes resturants attractions and stores. Also there is eldon square shopping centre and everything you need for shopping lots of clothes music and all kinds of shops. The heart of the city really. Being christmas the light displays are really pretty as is fenwicks window. And just further down near greys monument there is a lovely christmas market.

Northumberland Street dominates Newcastle city centre but I feel it has gone back a lot. Not much atmosphere and lots of people wanting money and loads of chewing gum on the ground. Other places seem to have more character to me Im afraid.

This is the main street of Newcastle city centre. Haymarket metro station at one end and Monument Metro station at the other end. There is an entrance to The Eldon Square and access to The Monument Mall (which is currently undergoing a face lift. When it re-opens it will feature a Jamie Oliver Italian Restaurant, Jack Wills and other similar (more upper class) places). Also, access to Fenwicks, Newcastle's biggest department store.
I think every single shop on this street is part of a chain. Including Macdonalds, Burger King, BHS and Primark. Basically anything you could need but not for boutiques or one off buys.
There are usually at least two or three street entertainers along the street. Musicians, Magicians, the good and the very average. Usually a couple of those people who stand still all day (a weird skill if you ask me). My son loves to give money to all the buskers and join in if he gets half a chance.
If you need the loo try Marks and Spencers or BHS.

This is a grim, busy but handy shopping street. It’s has shops like M and S, Superdrug, KFC, Costa and Sainsbury’s local.

Unfortunately fenwick seems to have forgotten the way things are supposed to work in shops, staff are supposed to be welcoming polite and helpful not rude and condescending.
It seems nowadays that you are lucky to be allowed in the mighty fenwick and it is the customers place to make the effort. I used to find it quite funny just how rude some of the staff are but the snobbery is now just annoying. A recent visit to the Beatrix potter cafe just reaffirmed my views as everything about the experience was awful. Terrible food and even worse service and completely over priced. The shop has very little to offer that cannot be found elsewhere and I hate to say it but John Lewis really do appreciate customers and go out of their way to help politely. Wake up Fenwick we aren't lucky to be in your shop it is you who is lucky to have us!.

Northumberland Street is just perfect for Newcastle! It offers all sorts of entertainment, cafes and other sorts of shops. In sunny days there are many street artists playing music, dancing, doing sand dogs and so on. During winter and spring i like to go to 2nd floor of BHS for a cuppa as it gets nice radiation from the sun in afternoons, just a little gem! Explore northumberland street and i see you will just love it!
