There was a nice small exhibition and the castle itself was cool, although sometimes difficult to navigate with no clear route laid out. Also I'm not quite sure the price matches time spent there when most attractions in Newcastle are free but if you love...More

It is an interesting historical site, lots of walking and over 100 very steep steps. Very little actual historical objects other than the building. There were some fun things to try on and explore. .....but expensive though.

Spent an enjoyable hour and half visiting the castle. Informative and enjoyable with great views from the top. Would have benefited from the staff being more engaging with visitors but otherwise it was reasonable value and worth the visit.

I had heard that the castle was recently renovated, and it showed. I've now been on maybe a half a dozen tours of various castles, and I would call this one 'simple, stark and self-guided," but being relatively empty of furnishing doesn't always have to...More

An excellent tour undertaken by a well informed and witty guide. Given the apparent lack of surviving material ( the gatehouse and keep are all that remain) the tour was full and entertaining. Well worth it

The castle is well-worth a visit even if you do not pay to go inside (it costs £7). It is built on the site of a Roman Fort, which dates back to 122AD, although the current building "only" dates back to 1172. There is lots...More

The castle is within the city between the railways. It is well kept and interesting. It is worth a short visit. We had only one day in Newcastle and not that much time, but you do not need that much time for the castle.

My son and I took the tour led by Bill and learned a lot. It was exactly what i was hoping, enough information to be interesting but not too much to be boring. The castle has many steps and some of them are quite steep but...More

It does seem rather strange that one has to buy tickets at the Black Gate which is little more than a shop and exhibition space when there is a person checking tickets in the actual castle keep!. However, that is as it is and I...More

The castle is a few stories with very narrow stairs as you can imagine. But the view from the top worth climbing those stairs. There is a light and musical show in the main hall which gives you information about the castle and inhabitants. It...More

Visits to the Castle are self-led, however we do run occasional guided tours, e.g. as part of Heritage Open Days. Please do keep an eye on our website's What's On page.
