Despite all the current difficulties, Guildford High Street seems to still be vibrant and busy-ish.
There's a good mix of (mostly upmarket) chains as well as independent shops, and off the High Street are plenty of alleys with smaller shops and eateries, many worth investigating.
Neighbouring North Street is very much the poor relation now, although a few shops have entrances in both streets.
Near the bottom of the High Street is the statue of the Surrey Scholar, in full flow with his books, and at the top the statue of George Abbot, once Bishop of Guildford then Archbishop of Canterbury. These statues show the mix of eras and architectures along the span of the place, steeped in history.

A lovely combination of traditional architecture and modern shops. Great to see the cobbled street is still there. New touches like the statue of the student at the bottom near the access to the river with the old - statue of George Abbott at the top.

Guildford High Street a lovely place to visit once or twice, with some lovely old buildings and a traffic free cobbled high street (except early morning and late afternoon, when traffic is allowed). It is steep though.

It's main problem is if you live there and want to shop. It has lots of small independent shops, but they all cater for rich old people, which is a very large proportion of Guildford's population, so they know their market. If you are not rich, it's not a good place to shop. Medium sized Sainsburys at the top of the high street is useful.

Guildford is a unique shopping experience. Never ceases to amaze me how much choice there is for shops / restaurants, historical venues and walks from the High Street - Pewley Down is a MUST if you have the time!
Wonderful views from High Street the further up you go, and there are great eating venues for even better views: The Ivy, Thai Terrance & House of Fraser stores. Guildford is easily accessible by train.

Shambles of over-priced corporates, vape and mobile phone shops, and empty units. Nothing of use - butcher, baker, fishmonger, independents, etc. Very badly maintained and shambolic and untidy, and blighted by stinking traffic jams all around. Also some of the worst cycling provision I have ever seen throughout the UK.

A shining example of the division between rich and poor in England today. Guildford high street is filled with over priced shops. Even the charity shops ask ridiculous prices. Its very sad to see how Guildford has evolved over the past 50 years.

We used to live in Guildford and loved it then. We now live in Canda and still love it. The High Street is such a wonderful place to spend time on drinking coffee, window shopping and enjoying the street entertainment!

Post Covid Guildford has, like many town centres, suffered. Yes, there are shut shops and yes there are ‘better’ parts of town as compared with some others. The traffic is not for the faint hearted, as driver or pedestrian. However there remains (or there was on he very recent Saturday we visited) a buzz about the place. Perhaps the street side market played a role. The architecture of the buildings, particularly as you move up the hill, is worth examining too and, of course, don’t forget the castle just behind the shops.

Clarks shut, no decent department store, old fashioned cramped parking, one way system a confusing nightmare. Gangs of teens hanging around. Won't be back any time soon!
