Overview
More
The spire of St Mary's is one of the tallest in England and for over 500 years it has dominated the skyline of Shrewsbury's old town. In 1739, showman Robert Cadman attempted to slide from it, head first, using a rope and a grooved breastplate. His engraved obituary stands outside the west door. The church is now the only complete Medieval church in Shrewsbury. It dates from Saxon times and has beautiful additions from the 12th-century onwards. Inside, the atmosphere is peaceful with the soaring stone arches giving way to the church's great treasure - its stained glass. There are panels in glorious colour including the world-famous 14th-century 'Jesse window' filled with figures of Old Testament kings and prophets. No other church in the country has a collection to equal it. The Café at St Mary's Church, Shrewsbury, run by the Battlefield 1403 farm shop and deli, is now open Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm.

There are times when we think we have seen enough churches but then we still go in to be sure we are not missing something. St Mary's is worth entering. It exudes history and has some unique features.

A fabulous church to visit with its superb windows. I believe it has the 3rd or 4th highest steeples. I always take advantage of lighting some candles for loved ones. The cafe is well worth a visit also.

There are hundreds of historic and good looking churches throughout the world. Some have in a sense a unique selling point. This is one of the them. The brickwork outside is amazing but the real USP is the church windows which are excellent

On arrival I was greeted by friendly volunteers. They were very enthusiastic to explain the details of the church but mainly about the stunning Jesse window. The day I went the sun shone through showing the amazing colours. Worth a visit.

I'd never heard of a Jesse window, but the medieval stained glass was a revelation. Really good information and a helpful volunteer.

There is no charge but in most churches in u.k. Donations are always welcome. The peace bestowed by visit to this church cannot be priced. Give what you can and if you can't don't worry. Say a prayer and be thankful for... More
