I can’t imagine there are many places like this! Tucked away in the back streets of Whitby near the foot of the 199 steps to the Abbey. The smokehouse doesn’t look like it has changed for years, just like the counter. We bought a pair...More

These are good sized kippers, unlike the horrid sardine sized things in supermarkets. Well smoked and tasty. You can smell Fortunes a long way off and if they are currently smoking & the wind is in the right direction you can smell them across the...More

A friend at work used to live in Whitby and said you must try the kippers. A short walk from the bottom if the 199 steps is well worth we'll. if you are lucky enough to look into the smoke house it's fascinating. The kippers...More

The kippers are famous in whitby, but seem to be a bit of a secret to everyone else. The building is really special (and you feel like you are back in time).I bought two pairs and they were truely delicious. I cannot wait to go back...More

This place is worth seeking out just to see the building the kippers are smoked and sold from. It is tucked away on a narrow street with fisherman's cottages. Mostly now made into holiday accommodation. It really is a step back in time.

Whitby is such an interesting place. If you’re travelling from the South it’s perhaps not the easiest place to find. But if you do make the effort make sure you take a moment to buy some kippers or smoked salmon from Fortunes. We always make...More

The staff were personable and helpful. Having never had kippers and staying just next door, we knew we needed to have this experience. The smoked kipper pate was great on crackers.

We have bought from the smokehouse many times over the years and always managed to let the attitude of the miserable sods that run it go over our heads . But when you buy stuff that is sub standard you tend not to repeat the...More

Excellent kippers at a very reasonable price, all smoked on the premises. Nothing better than walking down to the shop, picking up a large kipper and walking back to cook it for breakfast!
