The rail bridge is a hidden gem
Aug 2020 • Solo
There is or were three Blackfriars bridges, all side by side. The first is the road and pedestrian bridge built in 1869 on the site of an older bridge and famous for the carvings of birds and marine life on its piers. The second was the old railway bridge from 1886 for the London, Chatham & Dover Railway, of which today only the piers remain, the bridge having been demolished in 1985.

The third is the new railway bridge opened in the 1970's, which was widened and altered around 10 years ago to extend the platforms of Blackfriars Station across the river and create a second entrance on the other side. Blackfriars Station is therefore one of the few stations in the world to sit above a major river with station entrances at both ends.

Even better, the platforms running along the two sides provide stunning views up and down the river through their glass walls. For me, this is the best way to cross from Blackfriars tube station to Tate Modern, one of London's hidden gems.

Vehicle & pedestrian bridge over the River Thames
Nov 2019
Historic bridge dating back to the opening of the current bridge in 1869 for the existing bridge which replaced one build 100 years earlier. We walked across on the footpath. Nice river and riverbank views,

This is of course one of many bridges across the Thames, but interesting because there is the old road bridge next to the new rail bridge, separated by the pillars from the original rail bridge.

Bridge
Dec 2019
One of the many Bridges that crosses the Thames. The positioning of this bridge was quite good from Gabriel's Wharf. There is also an interesting design on the end of the bridge from the Southbank Walkway area.

A nice wide bridge

A nice bridge to walk across. Ample space for pedestrians with wider footpath.

Get a nice view of the St Paul’s cathedral’s dome from the bridge.

If Carlsberg did railway bridges....
Nov 2019
The original Blackfriars bridge is nice enough, but the railway bridge - and the station they've built upon it - has, to my mind, one of the best views over London that you could imagine. The only railway station in the city to span both sides of the river, the refurbishment work of around 2010 has resulted in stunning views over the City of London, including those iconic buildings the 'Walkie Talkie', the 'Gherkin', the 'Cheesegrater' and not forgetting the 'Shard'. To see these suddenly appear in view all together, as you exit the dark tunnel you've been in ever since before St Pancras, is a sight to behold. Surely one of the best stations to arrive at in the UK.

interesting architecture
Oct 2019
A walk along the Thames is definitely one of London's greatest tourist attractions. In the area where the bridge is located you will find several fascinating places that are worth visiting. I especially recommend Tate Modern Galery.
